Show Notes

Join Allen Roberds for a daily scripture reflection on Day 14 of the Book of Mormon reading plan, focusing on Lehi's Dream in 1 Nephi 8:28-38. This episode delves into 1 Nephi 8:33, discussing the importance of "heeding not" the world's scorn when striving to live the gospel of Jesus Christ and standing firm in your faith.

Key Points

  • The great multitude in the strange building points the finger of scorn at those partaking of the fruit of the tree of life.
  • It is crucial to 'heed them not' when following the gospel of Jesus Christ, even when faced with ridicule and unpopularity.
  • Prioritizing the Lord's influence may require making difficult choices about worldly friendships that pull one away from their faith.
  • Listeners are reminded that they are not alone in their efforts to live the gospel, and the Lord prepares a way to find support and overcome challenges.
  • Maintain your principles and continue doing your best, trusting that you will ultimately succeed in your spiritual journey despite worldly opposition.

What a fantastic reminder that, hey, when you're partaking of the gospel of Jesus Christ, it's not going to be the popular road. You're not going to be in the popular group, and that's okay.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life, and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I am cheering for your every success. Thank you for sticking with me.

And I got to do a shout-out to you. Congratulations on two solid weeks of this. This is day 14.

You're awesome. You're awesome. Well done.

Thanks for listening. Thanks for doing your readings. I hope this is enjoyable to you, and I hope it's adding value to you and your scripture study.

Today we're going to finish Lehi's dream and then talk a little bit about the plates of Nephi on a little side note. But if you're following the 365-day plan, you're going to read 1 Nephi 8:28-38, that finishing the dream of Lehi. And then you're going to also read 1 Nephi.

Now, let's get into the back end of Lehi's dream here. The verse I've selected today is verse 33, and you need to kind of read the whole dream in order to understand the context. I'm not going to give it to you here.

You can read that. You'll be able to dig into it and see where we're at. But at verse 33, something vital happens that I think is applicable to our day and worth digging into as families and as friends that are trying to do our best today and live the gospel.

It says, "And great was the multitude that did enter into that strange building." And after they did enter into that building, they did point the finger of scorn at me and those that were partaking of the fruit also. But we heeded them not. We heeded them not.

Those last four words are so amazing to me because, one, we have this great multitude. Okay. There's a lot of people in this building, and the building, as he describes in the chapter, is, is, it's, it's money and riches and wealth and, and it's life and it's the world and it's amazing and it's awesome and it looks so great and it's yay, and everybody wants to be there.

Pointing the finger of scorn. They're making fun. They're telling them how stupid they are for consuming the fruit on the tree.

Now, Lehi, we just talked yesterday about how Lehi realized it was more amazing, so exceedingly joyous, that he wanted to share it with everybody. And yet here's this incredible, great multitude that's going to point and make fun of. It's got me thinking about times in my life where I've had to make the decision of whether I was going to keep specific people in my life, close people, friends in my life.

And I had to decide if these friends were going to be a greater influence on me than the Lord was because they were going in a different direction. And to make the choice of trying to decide whether to stay in that group and stay with those people and associate with them or whether to walk away — that was a difficult choice. But then Lehi's words here, "but we heeded them not." What a fantastic reminder that, hey, when you're partaking of the gospel of Jesus Christ, it's not going to be the popular road.

You're not going to be in the popular group, and that's okay. In fact, the more we can stick to our guns here, the more we can join together here, the more we'll be able to find each other to support each other on the road of the gospel, rather than have to walk away from those that are inside of this strange building, this multitude. So if you're feeling alone, know that you're not alone.

There are others out here trying to live the gospel of Jesus Christ. Stick to it. We find each other.

Some of you have maybe found each other through this podcast or through listening to it. We will find each other. The Lord prepares a way.

Remember that. And in fact, in chapter 9, he reminds us a little nod of that. If you find that in chapter 9, I'd love to know about it.

Send me a little something that you found it in chapter 9. But remember, the Lord prepares a way for us to accomplish the things. So in those difficult times when the multitude's pointing and scorning and making fun and laughing, don't worry.

Take the words here out of this verse. "Heed them not." Stick to what you're doing. Keep doing your best at it. You got this.

You're going to come out on top. That's all I have for today. Remember that "by small and simple things are great things brought to pass." Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. You know I'll be here tomorrow, and you know that I hope you are.
