0:00 / 00:05:20

Show Notes

Allen Roberds delves into Lehi's Vision of the Tree of Life in 1 Nephi 8:5-27, specifically focusing on the profound joy Lehi experienced from partaking of the fruit in 1 Nephi 8:12. This reflection explores the desire to share intensely positive experiences and the incomparable spiritual joy found in the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is depicted as "desirable above all other fruit."

Key Points

  • Explore Lehi's symbolic dream in 1 Nephi chapter 8, highlighting the 'exceedingly great joy' he received from partaking of the fruit.
  • Reflect on Lehi's immediate desire to share the incredibly desirable fruit with his family after experiencing its profound joy.
  • Consider what experiences in your own life bring such deep satisfaction that you feel compelled to share them with everyone.
  • Draw parallels between Lehi's desire to share the fruit and the enthusiasm people show when embracing the gospel of Jesus Christ, finding it 'more desirable above everything else in life.'

As they learned about the gospel, it became like leadership. And that's what Lehi says here: So desirable. It's more desirable above everything else in life.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you are listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I'm cheering for your every success. Welcome to day 13, my friends.

I am so excited for this one. We're getting into 1 Nephi chapter 8. Oh man, if you don't know 1 Nephi chapter 8, you started it a little bit last night.

A little bit of warning from Lehi, as he said Nephi and Sam are going to be blessed and Laman and Lemuel a little bit of warning, and then it kind of dropped you off a cliff, huh? Well, your reading today is 1 Nephi chapter 8, verses 5 through 27. So it's not all of Lehi's dream.

This chapter is known as Lehi's dream. Today is not all of it, but we're certainly going to get a good chunk of it today, most of it for sure. And the verse that I've chosen today is verse 12.

So we actually have back champions here. Verse 12 back champion. Yesterday was chapter 7, verse 12.

Today is chapter 8, verse 12. And this is Lehi in the middle of his dream. And he gets to this really cool, kind of the peak moment of his dream.

And as I partook of the fruit thereof, it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy. Wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also. For I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit.

Man, whatever he was eating, I want some of that, right? Like this is amazing fruit. And we know that this dream is a little bit of a symbolic explanation as well.

We're going to get to that later. So I won't go further than just saying that there's a symbolic nature to the dream. So it got me thinking: for you in your life, what is so good in your life that you just want to share it with everyone?

In fact, it's kind of interesting: on the flip side, if you're having a bad day, what is it you typically say when you're having a bad day? Someone says, 'Hey, are you all right?' And you typically say, 'I don't want to talk about it.' Isn't that interesting, right? Like we don't tend to want to talk about our bad days.

But what is so good in your life that you want to share it with everyone? It got me thinking about times in my life when I have witnessed people embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ and experience it for the first time in their lives. They get so excited about what they're learning, and then that excitement spills over into wanting to talk to other people about it.

I saw it on my mission as a missionary, where people would share with their friends or their family and they would say, 'Hey, you want to come check this out? Hey, you want to come listen to this message?' There have been times where I have served in various callings that are missionary callings, right? Like a ward mission leader or something.

And I can remember specifically families in Houston, Texas. I used to live in Houston, Texas, with my family, and I did ward mission work there. And there were families there that as they learned about the gospel, it became like leadership.

And that's what Lehi says here: So desirable. It's more desirable above everything else in life. That's worth digging into a little bit and thinking about.

But that is all I have for today. Remember that by small and simple things great things are brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt.

I'll be here tomorrow. I hope you are too.
