Join Allen Roberds on Savory Salt as he delves into Isaiah 58:13, reflecting on the phrase "The Sabbath is a Delight." Drawing inspiration from Elder Russell M. Nelson's teachings, this episode explores how embracing the Sabbath as a day of spiritual rest, renewal, and refocus can transform our lives, moving beyond rigid rules to a deeper understanding of its purpose.

Key Points

  • Allen Roberds examines Isaiah 58:13, emphasizing the profound message that "The Sabbath is a Delight."
  • The episode references Elder Russell M. Nelson's impactful 2015 General Conference talk, also titled "The Sabbath is a Delight," and his question, "How will I change?"
  • Listeners are invited to consider the Sabbath as a day for vital spiritual rest, renewal, and refocus, an approach derived from Allen's personal scripture study.
  • The reflection encourages a shift from a list of do's and don'ts to an attitude and conduct that allows for the full spiritual blessings and delight of the Sabbath day.

I just wrote these three words, rest, renewal, refocus. And then I put this: All three can occur through your attitude and conduct of the Sabbath.

In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to Him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as Savory Salt.

Hello, my friends. It's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve.

The question for each of us is, because of what I have heard and felt during this conference, how will I change? That was a question posed to all of us many years ago by Russell M. Nelson.

The tail end of Isaiah. We're finishing Isaiah with Isaiah chapters 58 through 66. And as I was finishing inside of 58, yesterday we launched with 58:11.

I thought, well, that was on the fasting side of things. How do I do this? I've got to talk about the Sabbath just a little bit because Isaiah is such a great combination of both of them.

And as I came to Isaiah 58:13, well, perhaps the same phrase sticks out to you. Let me read it and see if it does. 58:13 is our verse for today. It says, "Okay, there's the if statement." The then statement is verse 14, so you're going to have to finish the then statement.

The promises that come. But inside of there, as I was reading this, that phrase, Sabbath a delight, stuck out to me and I thought, oh man, President Nelson gave the best talk about the Sabbath being a delight. So I'll just jump in and I'll do a little research and we'll check out the "The Sabbath Is a Delight" talk.

And then to my surprise, I kept scrolling through President Nelson and it wasn't when it was President Nelson. This talk was in April of 2015 when President Nelson was Elder Nelson in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. And I thought, my goodness, has it been that long since I heard him talk about the Sabbath being a delight?

Because of the words that you write and reflect on, because of the sentences you scratch in the margins of your scriptures, how will you change? I love that question by President Nelson. And inside of it, as he talked about the Sabbath being a delight, I had a footnote that I put inside of here from August of 2015.

So it took me a few months to get around to studying the talk. In August of 2015, I put this note in my scripture app and I want to keep it here and share it with you as well. I just wrote these three words, rest, renewal, refocus.

And then I put this: All three can occur through your attitude and conduct of the Sabbath. My friends, the Sabbath day is an interesting one. Elder Nelson or President Nelson talks about how he used to make a list of do's and don'ts. And I can remember early on as parents we tried to have kind of that do's and don'ts list of.
