3.239 Lead Me to The Rock

In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to Him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as Savory Salt.

Hello, my friends. It's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve.

Are you ready for an Old Testament meets New Testament connection months before we even break into the New Testament? I hope so, because I sometimes am looking exceptionally forward to the New Testament in comparison to some of the stories we read in the Old. I just have to be honest when I say that.

But today is not that day. Today is a great connection to the New Testament, and I'm excited to share it with you. Let's get into our verse for today, and then let's make this connection.

We're going to go to Psalm 61 here. A lot of these Psalms are short, but they are powerful. And here we have kind of a prayer to the Lord.

And in verse 2, it says this: "From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I." Now you may notice in your scripture there, if you're looking, that that has just a topical guide reference to rock. But what I want to emphasize here, and some of you may see where this is going, maybe not. If you remember the conversation that Peter and Jesus Christ have in Matthew chapter 16, we won't read any verses from that because we will stay true to Savory Salt here in one verse a day.

But inside of that conversation, we actually have two different rocks being referred to. We have Peter, Peter himself being named Petros, R-O-S, Petros. It basically means like little rocks, like gravel or stubble type rocks, little rocks that kind of be pushed around.

And then the Lord tells Peter, "for upon this rock," right? And that rock is Petra, with an A at the end. So we have Peter who's named Petros, and we have the rock that Christ is going to build this foundation on, Petra.

This is a massive, solid foundation. In other words, Jesus Christ says, "I am going to be the Petra. I will be the foundation at which all of this is built upon." Very cool moment inside of Matthew 16, until you bring it back to Psalm 61 and it becomes even cooler.

So many times the Old Testament to New Testament connection is missed sometimes. We see some things here and there, but then when it comes to the Lord referencing these Old Testament scriptures, he is the massive foundation that you can build upon. And so as David shares in his psalm here, as he's struggling, he's going to cry when his heart's overwhelmed, lead me to Christ that is higher than I.

What an amazing connection using the same form of rock! Not little Petros, not this rubble, not this little kick-around pebbles that you can kick around and move. We're talking about the massive rock foundation that is Jesus Christ, our Lord.

I love that connection. When I was reading this and I'm thinking through, I was like, "wait a second, I remember these connections here to the word rock." I am grateful that Jesus Christ is our rock. And today, just for a little uplifting tune, I threw in here a link to one of mine that I love on my difficult days.
