In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as Savory Salt.

Hello, my friends. It's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve.

Good friends matter. And I think the Lord tries to teach us that over and over again in the scriptures. We are reading this week 1 Samuel 17-18, 24-26, and 2 Samuel 5-7.

I hope you enjoyed Hope's message yesterday as she decided to jump in and share one of her favorite sections of the David and Goliath story there. And I appreciate her sharing her insight on how the Lord will handle our battles for us if we will turn it over to him. Today we shift gears a little bit as we get to the backside of David and Goliath and we get further into kind of David and Saul's son, Jonathan.

I want to take a look at how the Old Testament describes Jonathan, specifically in terms to Saul and to David, and then let's see what it means for us. Our verse for today is 1 Samuel 18, verse 1. And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David.

And Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Now, this is next-level friendship here. And yeah, there's some interesting context here because we don't know if Jonathan, as the son of Saul, theoretically, he's in line for the kingdom, right?

He should probably be the one to inherit the kingdom. So he's basically like prince, you know, king-in-waiting. So, we are going to start with David's mission, and I think this is a very interesting thing.

And yet, here he sees, not just accepts David for who he is, but this is such an interesting phrase in here: he was knit with the soul of David. This cool, tight highlight in here—this friendship that's like, 'I know what you're thinking, and you know what I'm thinking,' and distance doesn't seem to matter—that type of friendship. They loved each other's presence.

Their souls were truly knit together. My friends, may you and I, through our attempts to be a little more savory, consider the ways that we show up as a friend. May we find better friends in our lives as we seek to be better friends; this is the hope and message that I get out of David and Jonathan.

That is all for today, my friends. You and I have come here for such a time as this. Step forward in faith and let's be savory salt. We will be here tomorrow, and we hope
