Show Notes
Allen Roberds explores 2 Nephi 29:8, emphasizing the profound clarifications modern revelation, particularly the Book of Moses and Book of Abraham, brings to understanding the Old Testament. Discover how these scriptures, along with the Book of Mormon, provide essential doctrines on premortal life, the Plan of Salvation, and unify testimonies of Jesus Christ, forming a greater whole.
Key Points
- The Book of Moses offers crucial doctrinal insights missing from the Old Testament, including details on premortal life, creation through organization, Satan's origins, and the clear Plan of Salvation.
- Modern revealed scriptures like the Book of Moses and Book of Abraham are given to strengthen our testimonies and understanding of the doctrine of Christ for our day.
- Listeners are encouraged to diligently study and utilize existing modern revelation (Book of Moses, Book of Abraham, Book of Mormon) before longing for more new scripture.
- 2 Nephi 29:8 affirms that God speaks the same words to all nations, and the testimonies of different scriptural records will eventually run together.
- All scriptures, both ancient and modern, combine like tributaries to form a greater, unified testimony of Jesus Christ as our Savior.
I love that this verse reminds us that all of these scriptures are going to run together, the way that like rivers have tributaries that all eventually come together and become one raging river.

In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to Him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as savory salt.
Hello, my friends. It's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve.
Can we just start out this episode with a shout out to the Book of Moses? It has been incredible to go through again this year as we're studying the Old Testament. And I hope it's been an opportunity for you to see what we believe in modern revelation.
The Book of Moses was, as Latter-day Saints believe, revealed to Joseph Smith and holds essential differences, essential clarifications, essential pieces of doctrine that the Old Testament simply doesn't have, I might add to that, anymore. Perhaps it had it in its original translations, and through the centuries and millennia, those pieces had been taken out or lost. That's what I've been thinking about as I get ready to do our verse for today.
I tried to ponder about ways that the Book of Moses shows us doctrinal pieces that are missing from the Old Testament. I put together just a small list that I put inside of the episode notes here, but just some things that came to the top of my mind here where the Book of Moses has helped us understand the Old Testament better. We have a better view of premortal life and why we're sent to this earth in the first place.
We have a better understanding of God creating the earth through organizational means rather than simply inventing something out of nothing. We have clearer understanding of the origins of Satan and his desire to destroy man and his agency. We have a clear blueprint written out for the plan of salvation, explained clearly and in detail that the Old Testament is missing.
We understand the purpose of God and the need for Jesus Christ as our Savior. We see Enoch as not just a man who walked with God but truly a builder and a leader. We see clearly baptism by immersion and receiving the Holy Ghost from the time of Adam and Eve.
And we see a clear testimony of Jesus Christ as God's Only Begotten Son and our Savior. That's just a little list that I made. And perhaps you take some time to add to the list as well of what the Book of Moses gives us.
Now, I know that there's a group of, I'll say, us, right? There's a group of us out there that are so excited for the day when more scripture will be revealed. We know that the day will come where, you know, more plates will be unsealed and more revelation will come.
But I have to ask, how well do you know and dig into and enjoy the Book of Moses and the Book of Abraham? Because those two books are revealed scripture. They are modern revealed scripture, and they're given to us to help build our testimonies and understanding of the doctrine of Christ.
Perhaps we should already use the revealed scripture that's been given us. And not, it's not even to mention, the Book of Mormon and the miracle that that's been. So I'm getting a little bit into my message before the verse.
Let's get to the verse for today. It's going to come from the Book of Mormon, and it's going to come to the other side. Those of us that are waiting for new scripture, perhaps a reminder that we have new scripture that's been revealed in our times, the modern day, at least.
Now let's look at the other side as a reminder as well. Our verse for today is going to be 2 Nephi 29, verse 8. And this is, if you'll remember, we're seeing a glimpse of the day where many will have the Bible and say that there's simply no other reason to have any scripture than just the Bible.
And in the middle of that conversation, verse 8 says, I speak the same words unto one nation like unto another, and when the two nations shall run together, the testimony of the two nations shall run together also. My friends, I am so grateful for modern revelation. I'm grateful for revealed scripture as we have it here.
I'm grateful for ancient scripture that has been translated and revealed and preserved for our day as well. And I love that this verse reminds us that all of these scriptures are going to run together, the way that like rivers have tributaries that all eventually come together and become one raging river. I'm excited for what I have to read into and to combine together and to build a greater testimony for me of the love of our Savior Jesus Christ and his role as our Savior.
I hope that the Book of Moses, as we've been digging into it, we're not quite done with it yet, but I hope that it has been a breath of fresh air for you in your scripture study as it has been for me in mine. That's all for today, my friends. You and I have come here for such a time as this.
Step forward in faith and let's be Savory Salt. We'll be here tomorrow, and we hope you are too.
