In Matthew 5.13, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth, a bold reminder that our lives are meant to carry his flavor, his truth, and his love to the world. Join me each day to explore one verse of scripture and one thought, striving to stay full of savor and truly live as savory salt. Hello my friends, it's great to have you with me.
Today let's be anxiously engaged in a good cause and bring to pass much righteousness. Who in the world is Jared Carter? That, I must admit, was one of the first things I thought of when I read Doctrine and Covenants section 79.
We are reading this week Doctrine and Covenants sections 77 through 80 as well as Alma chapters 29 through 33 and I promise we're going to get to Alma chapter 29 through 33 in a minute. I just had one more from these Doctrine and Covenants readings I wanted to share. And it's inside of Doctrine and Covenants section 79.
And it's interesting because this is one of those sections that you kind of pause and go, why did this end up Scripture? Why did this end up canonized? Right?
And I know that it's part of it is because it's a direct revelation through Joseph Smith, the prophet. I get that. But then it's like a mission call specifically to Jared Carter.
But I paused inside of that and I thought that interesting What is it First of all who is Jared Carter and his story You can go into some of the historical context and historical references and whatnot His story is quite interesting He left on a business trip and while he was on his business trip at the time he heard the gospel He prayed about the Book of Mormon He gained a testimony of it and then kind of lost desire to do the business that he was on the business trip for and instead turned to We were building the kingdom and then spent quite some time as a missionary for the church. And yet, you know, he's not one of those common names inside of the early pioneer times. He's not like a Sidney Rigdon or Oliver Cowdery, right?
He's not one of those common names, but he had quite an impact on the early growth of the church. And I thought, you know, how many, how many Jared Carters are there out there in the world? I think maybe, you know, I'm a Jared Carter.
I love the idea and I love the concept of building the kingdom. I want to take my place in building the kingdom and help it grow. I want to share missionary experiences.
I want to share my testimony. But in terms of the grand scheme of, you know, church knowledge of people, no one really knows Allen Roberts. I mean, you guys do as you're listening to Savory Salt.
But like, you know, in the grand scheme of things, I'm kind of a Jared Carter here. And so that why I wanted to share this verse today inside of this tiny little section in Doctrine and Covenants Our verse is Doctrine and Covenants section 79 verse 2 And this is a promise from the Lord to Jared Carter as he goes about his missionary service It says, And I will send upon him the Comforter, which shall teach him the truth and the way whether he shall go. And then it continues.
That's only part of the sentence, but that's the verse. And something I noticed inside of there is here he's promised by the Lord that he's going to have the Comforter, which we know is the Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit, right? And then the interesting thing is it's going to teach him the truth and the way.
And I love that because typically as missionaries, we're like, please help us have the Spirit so that the Spirit can teach the people that we're teaching and show them the truth and the way. But I love this one because as missionaries, maybe it's because I've been talking recently with my daughter on her mission and listening to her navigate through trying to have the spirit and trying to have the faith to know where the Lord wants her to go. But I love that the promise here is that Jared Carter is going to have the comforter, but that comforter is going to teach him the truth and the way.
My friends, do we seek the Spirit in our lives for our understanding? Do we seek the Spirit in our lives to have truth manifested to us We promised by President Nelson that the day is coming quickly if it not already here that we not going to be able to know truth from error without the constant guidance of the Holy Ghost in our lives. And I love verse 2 here as a reminder to have the comforter and seek the comforter in our I love that one and I'm grateful to Jared Carter and all of the Jared Carters that are currently building the kingdom who are otherwise nameless and unknown to the general populace of the church but are absolutely known to our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ by name.
They know us, they love us, they want us to succeed, and they will send us any resource we seek on the path of truth and light. That's all for today, my friends. Lift up your hearts and rejoice.
Cleave unto the covenants you have made, and together we will be savory salt. For more information, visit us at www.fema.org.
