Allen Roberds reflects on 1 Nephi 10:17, where Nephi desires to see and know spiritual things after hearing his father Lehi's vision. Discover how diligent seeking and placing yourself in an environment to hear spiritual experiences can empower you to receive personal revelation and testimony, just as Nephi and Joseph Smith did.

Key Points

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth, a bold reminder that our lives are meant to carry his flavor, his truth, and his love to the world. Join me each day to explore one verse of scripture and one thought, striving to stay full of savor and truly live as savory salt. Hello, my friends.

Great to have you with me. Today, let's be anxiously engaged in a good cause and bring to pass much righteousness. Welcome to our 24th day of the year.

I'm excited to have you with me today as I believe we've got a verse that just gets me excited and empowers me to seek for the Lord in my life. And I want to share it with you today. We've been reading through the week our Doctrine and Covenants and our Joseph Smith—History.

As I mentioned yesterday, we're now shifting into our Book of Mormon reading for the week. That is 1 Nephi chapters 9 through 12. I just kind of broke it out those last several days of the week here.

Looking at 1 Nephi 9 yesterday and 1 Nephi 10 today, 11 tomorrow, 12 to finish out the week. That's kind of how I've broken it down. You can break it down however you want to.

But let's take a look at our verse for today. This is out of 1 Nephi chapter 10 and it is verse 17. Nephi here is telling us about his experience as he heard from his dad the vision that his dad had and the other spiritual experiences that he was watching his dad have with the Lord.

Then we get a little bit of cool insight as to Nephi's version of what he supposed to do when he was hearing those and it being explained to him that these spiritual experiences are happening for someone so close to him in his life. Verse 17 says: And it came to pass, after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father concerning the words which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God, and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come, I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see and hear and know of these things. I love the context that Nephi gives here.

There's a couple of steps that he illustrates inside of verse 17 that I believe are available, as he says, to all. What does he do? Well, first of all, he's hearing the words that his dad speaks concerning the vision and concerning the things that he speaks by the Holy Ghost.

Nephi is putting himself in an environment to hear about spiritual experiences from his father. And I think that a key lesson for us: What environment do we put ourselves in when it comes to learning spiritual things? Learning from the Holy Ghost?

He puts himself in an environment to hear regularly the experiences that happen with his dad: the vision and the teachings that his dad, as a prophet of the Lord, is teaching. Sign me up. I want to be one of those that's diligently seeking the Lord.

I want to have the spiritual experiences that Nephi has had. I want to have the ones that Lehi has had. I want to have the ones that Joseph Smith has had.

As we've talked this week about Joseph Smith seeing Angel Moroni, and we talked last week about Joseph Smith seeing Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, these spiritual experiences, these manifestations are available to all those who diligently seek. My friends, we have the ability and we have the gift from God to experience those things and have our own knowledge and testimony of them. I encourage you to seek out where you spend your time focusing on the words of others that have shared spiritual experiences.

I encourage you to increase your desire to have them in your own life. And then I encourage you to do as Nephi did, to do as Joseph Smith did, and so many others have done. Exactly in my life, in line with what I've asked for.

I know it's available to all of us who diligently seek him. That's all for today, my friends. Lift up your hearts and rejoice.

Cleave unto the covenants you have made and together we will be savory salt. For more information, visit us at www.fema.org.
