Show Notes

In this Savory Salt episode, Allen Roberds explores Doctrine and Covenants 1:10, emphasizing that our actions toward our fellow man will be measured by the Lord on judgment day. He reflects on how we treat others, drawing inspiration from Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation and Christ's example as our exemplar. This daily scripture reflection encourages listeners to consider their interactions and strive to live with greater love and compassion.

Key Points

  • Doctrine and Covenants 1:10 teaches that the Lord will recompense every man according to their works and the measure they have given to their fellow man.
  • Our treatment of others is a critical factor in how we will be judged, highlighting the importance of charity and kindness.
  • The transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge in 'A Christmas Carol' serves as an illustration of extending care and concern to those around us.
  • Listeners are encouraged to reflect on their daily interactions and strive to treat others with the same love and compassion that the Lord would demonstrate.
  • Living as an exemplar means following Christ's example in all our dealings with others, making sure our 'measure' aligns with His.

I love this verse as a reminder to help me keep on target, to treat others the way that the Lord would treat them.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth, a bold reminder that our lives are meant to carry his flavor, his truth, and his love to the world. Join me each day to explore one verse of scripture and one thought, striving to stay full of savor and truly live as savory salt. Hello my friends, great to have you with me.

Today, let's be anxiously engaged in a good cause and bring to pass much righteousness. At the start of the week here, I want to make sure that I set time aside each week to make sure that you understand the readings for this week. I know it's a little bit different than season one where I gave you a specific reading each day.

And I have heard some of you. I know that reading the Doctrine and Covenants and the Book of Mormon at the same time. So that you can see the pace for the entire year that I'm going to be using for the Savory Salt podcast, hopefully that's a resource that comes to you.

Although I will mention that something I've added this year that should help is each day that we post the episode, I will have a link to the reading for that day. So hopefully you also can just go straight to the episode itself and link over to anything that's online. Whether it'll just go to a web browser if you're listening on a computer or with your phone, it'll just go over to the access of what the reading is for the day.

So I hope both of those resources will help you out. Our reading for this week is going to be Doctrine and Covenants, Section 1, where the Lord opens up and tells us exactly His point of view on what's happening in the world. And then we're also going to be reading from the Book of Mormon, 1 Nephi chapters 1 through 3.

So your pace this week is kind of D&C 1 and 1 Nephi 1 through 3. And again, those links will be inside of the episode. So let's get to our thought for today and our verse for today.

It comes from Doctrine and Covenants, Section 1, and it is Verse 10. And the Lord is telling us that He's going to pour out the wrath, right? The wrath of God is coming in Verse 9.

And so it's kind of a second part of a sentence there. You'll want to read Verse 9 to get the full sentence. But Verse 10 says unto the day when the Lord shall come to recompense unto every man, according to his work and measure to every man, according to measure that which he has measured to his fellow man.

Now, there's a lot of measuring going on in that verse, but this is what I understand with it. I understand that we're going to have some sort of measuring when we meet the Lord. I don't know exactly what judgment is going to look like, so to speak, right?

That judgment day. But what we see here is our treatment of others is going to come into play when the Lord judges us. He's going to look and see the measure with which we dealt with our fellow men.

And it made me think of the changes that come through Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol." He goes from a man that is so focused on just one thing, his wealth and his wealth alone, to by the end of the story coming full measure to taking care of those that work with him, taking care of his family, taking care all the way of Tiny Tim, right? He even saved Tiny Tim's world. And I think of that type of measuring for us.

How do we treat our fellow men? How do we treat ourselves inside of that? What measure do we give ourselves?

So as I want you to go forward today, think about the way with which you treat others. What does it look like? How would the Lord treat them if he were here today?

What would he say to them? And perhaps you can live inside of his example. He is after all, as we learned last week, our exemplar, the one that goes before us and shows us the way.

I love this verse as a reminder to help me keep on target, to treat others the way that the Lord would treat them. That's all for today, my friends. Lift up your heart and rejoice. Cleave unto the covenants you have made, and together we will be savory salt.
