Show Notes

Allen Roberds reflects on Ether 11 from the Book of Mormon, highlighting how ancient prophets repeatedly called the Jaredites to repent and forsake wickedness to avoid destruction. This episode draws a parallel to President Nelson's modern-day message, urging listeners to prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ through discipleship and temple worship.

Key Points

  • Ether 11 reveals a consistent pattern of ancient prophets warning the Jaredites of impending destruction if they did not repent.
  • Prophets throughout history, both ancient and modern, deliver the word of the Lord to prepare people for future events.
  • President Russell M. Nelson's message, 'The Lord Jesus Christ Will Come Again,' emphasizes preparing for the Second Coming by making discipleship a top priority.
  • Regular worship in the temple helps individuals focus on Jesus Christ, make sacred covenants, and gain access to strengthening power, peace, and protection.
  • Listeners are encouraged to heed the counsel of living prophets, taking their words to heart to receive greater blessings and align with divine will.

My friends, may we take a lesson from chapter 11 here and not be as the Jaredites of old, shunning the prophets and rejecting their words. May we instead listen to the words of our living prophet, take them to heart and follow his counsel.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I'm cheering for your every success. Welcome to day 350 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon together.

We are so close. Today, you're going to be reading Ether chapter 11 in its entirety. And inside of it, you're going to see three, maybe even four times that the prophets of the Lord.

Our verse for today comes right off the beginning with verse 1. And really this verse could be verse 1, it could be verse 6, it could be verse 12, and it could be verse 20. The Bible is a place where I saw the prophets coming and preaching specifically to the people.

But let's use verse 1 for our example today. Ether 11:1 says, "And there came also in the days of Com many prophets, and prophesied of the destruction of that great people, except they should repent, and turn unto the Lord, and forsake their murders and wickedness." This message gets repeated time and again. As I mentioned, verses 6, 12, and 20 have very similar messages to them at different times across the history of the Jaredites.

Whatever time it is, prophets come to tell us the word of the Lord and to tell us what's coming. It made me pause and say, "Wow, I know we've done this before, but what is President Nelson saying? What message does he give?" And in our most recent, at least to the recording of this episode, our most recent General Conference, this is one of the messages that President Nelson gave.

I put a link inside this podcast episode, but President Nelson's title of this talk is "The Lord Jesus Christ Will Come Again." And it says inside of there, "Brothers and sisters, now is the time for you and for me to prepare for the Second Coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Now is the time for us to make our discipleship our highest priority." In a world filled with dizzying distractions, how can we do this? Regular worship in the temple will help us.

In the house of the Lord, we focus on Jesus Christ. We learn of Him. We make covenants to follow Him.

We come to know Him. As we keep our temple covenants, we gain greater access to the Lord's strengthening power. In the temple, we receive protection from the buffetings of the world.

We experience the pure love of Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father in great abundance. We feel peace and spiritual reassurance in contrast to the turbulence of the world. Here is my promise to you: Every sincere seeker of Jesus Christ will find Him in the temple.

You will feel His mercy. You will find answers to your most vexing questions. You will better comprehend the joy of His gospel.

My friends, may we take a lesson from chapter 11 here and not be as the Jaredites of old, shunning the prophets and rejecting their words. May we instead listen to the words of our living prophet, take them to heart and follow his counsel. Doing so will only lead us to greater blessings in alignment with our Heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.

That's all for today, my friends. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow and I hope you are too.
