Show Notes

Allen Roberds explores 3 Nephi 26:14-16, where Christ miraculously enables children and even babes to speak profound, marvelous things, surpassing even His own revealed teachings. This reflection invites listeners to find spiritual wisdom and insights from children, considering their unique connection to the Plan of Salvation.

Key Points

  • Discover the miraculous event in 3 Nephi 26:14-16 where Christ loosed the tongues of children, allowing them to speak great and marvelous things beyond what He had taught the multitude.
  • Consider the profound idea that even babies, though new to physical life, possess an inherent wisdom and 'old souls' that can teach adults deeper truths about existence.
  • Reflect on the spiritual significance of children in the Plan of Salvation, understanding them as intelligences entering mortal experience with much to impart.
  • Explore how we can learn vital doctrines and spiritual insights from the pure perspectives of children and babes, as ancient Nephite parents did.

My friends, find a baby today. Look into their eyes and see the old souls that are there.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I'm cheering for your every success. We've never done this one before on Savory Salt.

It's "Hug a Baby Day." That's right. It's "Hug a Baby Day." Welcome to day 316 on our 365 day journey through the Book of Mormon together. Today, you're going to be reading 3 Nephi chapter 26 verses 12 through 21.

And then you're going to read 3 Nephi chapter 27 verses 1 through 8 as Christ answers the question of what his church should be named. Now yesterday we talked about Mormon explaining that he was only allowed to write a very limited amount of the things that happened with Christ and the Nephites. That continues in 3 Nephi 26 here inside of the verses that we get.

But the things that we do get are quite astounding. They are miraculous and literally miracles that we want to dive into. So let's look at our verse today, 3 Nephi 26:14.

It says, this is just in the middle of all the things that are happening, it says: And it came to pass, that he did teach and minister unto the children of the multitude of whom hath been spoken. And he did loose their tongues, and they did speak unto their fathers great and marvelous things, even greater than he had revealed unto the people. And he loosed their tongues that they could utter.

Now first of all, you have to pause inside of this and say, "Wait a second, how young are children that have tongues that aren't loosed?" And we find out actually in later verses, verse 16, that it even references babes speaking here. To the casual listener, this may sound quite discombobulating. Let's be honest.

We're talking about babies here, children, very small children, who are teaching their parents doctrines that even Christ had not taught the people at this stage. My friends, I guess it's perhaps the perspective of my life right now as I have a couple of nephews and their wives that are expecting children and we're going to have babies back in the family, right, for a little bit of time. But there's something amazing about babies.

They are so new to earth in a physical sense and yet they have so much that they could continue to teach us about how to live our lives in this physical realm. So, my friends, find a baby today. Look into their eyes and see the old souls that are there.

I love that in the Plan of Salvation, we understand who these children are. We understand that they are intelligences coming into the mortal experience. And I love this idea.

These people have such an amazing miraculous event and notice that it doesn't say and then the moms and dads went, "Oh, that cute kids! Nice doctrine!" Or the moms and dads didn't say, "Oh, look how fun they're preaching!" They were learning from the mouths that were loosed through these children. And I think we could absolutely take some time to see how our children and babes could teach us a little more about the Plan of Salvation.

That's all for today, my friends. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow and I hope you are too.
