Key Points

  • The Savior's admonition to 'Watch and pray always' in 3 Nephi 18:18 encourages constant, ongoing conversation with the Lord, not just formal prayers.
  • Continuous prayer serves as a crucial safeguard against temptation, keeping individuals spiritually vigilant.
  • President Nelson's counsel warns that a lack of the Spirit's promptings in future days will put one's testimony at risk.
  • The power of prayer is underscored by Christ's own actions of praying with children, disciples, and the multitudes before offering counsel on prayer.

I think the Savior is encouraging us to have a prayer with us at all times.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life, and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me, and know that I'm cheering for your every success. "Pray always" just sounds like a lot of prayer. Welcome to day 306 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon together.

Today, you're going to be reading 3 Nephi chapter 18, verses 17 through 39. You will finish that chapter. And here the Lord is actually going to leave as he intended to do before all of the miraculous visitations with the angels and such.

And he got some counsel for the people, and then he got some counsel for his disciples. And then he actually does leave in a cloud of sorts inside of this chapter. Our verse for today actually comes out of his conversation with the multitude.

And it 3 Nephi chapter 18, verse 18, actually. And it says inside of here: We be right back. I listening, and as I go through my day, I chat with the Lord.

Now, I not advocating by any means that you don't kneel down formally and pray morning, evening, night, all the times, right? Still do those things. But as the Savior talks to us here and says, "Watch and pray always, lest you enter into temptation," I think the Savior is encouraging us to have a prayer with us at all times.

It makes me think about President Nelson's encouragement to us and promise to us that there will be days in the future where if we do not have the Spirit of the Lord with us and present with us, and we do not listen to its promptings, we are going to put ourselves at risk. And we're going to find ourselves not being able to stay inside of our testimonies. This counsel is so telling, and he continues in it with 19, 20, and 21.

He keeps going inside of here, talking to us about the power of prayer. Something I love about this is it comes right on the backside of the Savior showing us what that looks like. He has sat down with the children and prayed.

He prayed with the disciples. He prayed with the multitudes. And then he turns around and helps us.

That's all for today, my friends. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow, and I hope you are too.
