Show Notes

Allen Roberds reflects on 3 Nephi 15:21, where Jesus Christ teaches the Nephites about 'one fold and one shepherd.' This episode explores Jesus's ministry to His 'other sheep,' emphasizing unity in Christ amidst societal divisions, and how recognizing Him as the universal Shepherd fosters peace and connection.

Key Points

  • Jesus Christ reveals to the Nephites that they are the 'other sheep' He previously spoke of in Jerusalem, expanding the understanding of His divine ministry.
  • The principle of 'one fold and one shepherd' promotes profound unity, offering a vital counter-message to the divisions often experienced in the world, such as during election seasons.
  • President Nelson's counsel to prioritize three core identities – child of God, child of the covenant, and disciple of Christ – reinforces the idea of belonging to a single spiritual fold under Jesus Christ.
  • The episode underscores that Jesus Christ is the Shepherd and Savior for all people, with a plan for universal unity among all His children, including those yet to know Him.

ultimately the plan, the hope, the desire of our Heavenly Father is that we all become one fold under one shepherd.

In Matthew 5.13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from, thank you for joining me. And know that I'm cheering for your every success. One fold and one shepherd.

Welcome to day 302 on our 365 day journey through the Book of Mormon together. Today, you're going to be reading 3 Nephi chapter 15, verses 7 through 24. You'll finish that chapter.

And 3 Nephi chapter 16, just on the front end, verse 7 through 24. Verses 1 through 3, although those first three verses there do seem to attach to what he, Jesus Christ that is, is talking about in 3 Nephi chapter 15. One of the things I love about the Book of Mormon's record of Jesus Christ coming to the people is we get moments like today where Jesus Christ explains that there were things that Heavenly Father did not want him to share in Jerusalem that he was allowed to share with the Nephites And so this is kind of a cool one today as he's talking about this, he pulls his disciples aside in 3rd Nephi 15 and he says, Hey, I want to let you know, I referenced other sheep and you are those other sheep.

But I never got to tell the people in Jerusalem about that. Let's take a look at it and see what it says here and then see what we can learn from it. Third Nephi chapter 15 verse 21 is our verse for today.

It says, And verily I say unto you that ye are they of whom I said, Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold. Them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd. Now it's a timely message for us because especially the United States, in fact, I think there's, I can't remember, like 70 something countries around the world right now that are having elections in this current year as of this recording.

And election season is always a fascinating time because what it brings is divisions. Rather than one fold and one shepherd you get people that line up along party lines And it not just about party lines but in our world we tend to take on mass identities We have groups that we follow We have other groups we want to be part of And it got me thinking about President Nelson message to the youth in his devotional in I think it was like 2022 or so And he shares inside of that just a memory I want to just share with you guys He says if you going to take on identities Make sure that you hold to three identities first and foremost. In all of the masses, these are the three.

And then President Nelson goes forward and says, first, remember that you are a child of God. That's the first identity. You are a son or a daughter of a Heavenly Father who loves you.

The second identity he mentions is as a member of the church, you are a child of the covenant. You have made covenants with Heavenly Father and those covenants are binding for both of you and the blessings that come into your life will come as a direct result of that. And third, you are a disciple of Christ.

Now I bring those up again and I put a link in the episode today to make sure that you can follow that if you want to go watch that Names from the Bible Book of Mormon Doctrine and Covenants Pearl of Great Price Names from the Bible Book of Mormon Dallin H Oaks Henry B Eyring Dieter F Uchtdorf It interesting that as he talking about this to the people of Nephi he saying look there are other sheep but I here to be the shepherd for all of them And then actually in 16 verse 1 he lets them know by the way there even more other sheep And I got to go talk to them as well And I haven done that yet but I going to My friends Jesus Christ is the shepherd for all He is the savior of the world And I grateful to him for it I hope that you and I can remember in our times of all of our different identities that we're associating with that ultimately the plan, the hope, the desire of our Heavenly Father is that we all become one fold under one shepherd. That's all for today my friends. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.

Keep it small, keep it simple and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow and I hope you are too.
