Show Notes

In this Savory Salt episode, Allen Roberds reflects on Alma 27:20-30 and Alma 28:1-8, exploring the profound example of the Nephites. Discover how the Nephites extended extraordinary forgiveness by not only offering land but also defending their repentant former enemies, the Anti-Nephi-Lehi, teaching a powerful lesson on forgiveness and reconciliation.

Key Points

  • The Nephites demonstrated monumental forgiveness by offering protection and land to the Anti-Nephi-Lehi, their former Lamanite enemies who had repented.
  • Alma 27:22 highlights the Nephites' commitment to defend those who, through repentance, had covenanted to lay down their weapons and would not fight for themselves.
  • This episode prompts reflection on how to forgive individuals who have genuinely repented, even if their past actions were deeply harmful.
  • The narrative of the Anti-Nephi-Lehi becoming the people of Ammon illustrates the transformative power of repentance and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What the Nephites did here is nothing short of monumental when it comes to a lesson in forgiveness. I love it, and I hope I can learn something from it, and I hope I can better seek to not just forgive those that have done wrong, but see how I can help them in their lives. See how I can uplift them in their lives.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from, thank you for joining me, and know that I'm cheering for your every success. How can I forgive someone that has done something so bad to me that I can't seem to find the forgiveness for them? There's perhaps a lesson we could pull out of the Nephites.

And welcome to Day 194 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon together. We're going to be reading Alma chapter 27, verses 20 to 30. You will finish that chapter, and then you begin Alma 28, verses 1 through 8, which is kind of weird because it's a small chapter, but just roll with it.

We'll be all right. Let's take a look at what's happening today. These Anti are absolutely getting pummeled by the Lamanites, and Ammon and his brethren say, "Let's go to the Nephites and see if they will accept you." That, let's just frame that for just a second.

The Nephites and the Lamanites have been brutal enemies for hundreds of years. The Lamanites are described in here or in earlier chapters as wild and ferocious. They are murderers.

They constantly seek war with the Nephites. They have hatred for them all the way generations back. What could the Nephites possibly do when they turn and hear that these Lamanites, these former Lamanites, are looking for protection?

Let's take a look at the verse today. It's Alma chapter 27, verse 22. We find out that the Nephites are not just going to give them land to live on, but when they find out that through their repentance process they no longer will pick up arms to defend themselves, the Nephites offer also to defend them so that they can keep their repentance process pure.

There's a lot here. I don't know if I fully process this myself inside of the lesson here of the Nephites and the level of forgiveness that they show to these Lamanites that have gone through the repentance process. They have desired to have Jesus Christ in their lives, and now they stand before him as completely in their hands.

They have nowhere else to go, and the Nephites don't just say, "Yeah, everything's fine. You're good." They give them land. They give them protection.

That is quite a lesson to learn about what to do with those that have done bad things to us. Now I know there's going to be all sorts of different qualifiers. I understand that.

What if the person that did bad things isn't sorry? What if they don't repent? What if they do it in spite anyway?

What if they still hate you? I get all of that. The lesson here is really worth digging into, and I encourage you to take some time personally in your own reflection and your own private inspiration.

Let the Spirit teach you. What the Nephites did here is nothing short of monumental when it comes to a lesson in forgiveness. I love it, and I hope I can learn something from it, and I hope I can better seek to not just forgive those that have done wrong, but see how I can help them in their lives.

See how I can uplift them in their lives. If you're watching this podcast, you're going to be able to learn about the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is a beautiful lesson here from the Nephites as they accept the people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi that are going to actually become named the people of Ammon and are going to forever follow the gospel plan.

Beautiful. That's all for today, my friends. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.

Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow, and I hope you are too.
