In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life, and ultimately, you and I can be savory salt.
Hello, my friends and family. Wherever you are listening from, thank you for joining me and know that I am cheering for your every success. I got a quick question for you.
Do you remember the promise the Lord made to Lehi? Welcome to day 161 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon together. Today, you're going to be reading Alma chapter 9, verses 1 through 16.
And we are back into the Book of Mormon. Welcome to Alma. He's going to be talking to the people of Ammonihah after collecting his new companion, Amulek.
These people are going to be very repulsed by his message. They are not fans of what Alma has to say. They do give him some space to speak, although there are some seeming interruptions back and forth as they kind of go back and forth.
And then we get to our verse of the day today, Alma 9, verse 13: "Behold, do ye not remember the words which he spake unto Lehi, saying that inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments, ye shall prosper in the land?" And again, it is said that inasmuch as you will not keep my commandments, you shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord. My friends, do you remember the promise? This promise has now been given 500-plus years ago to Lehi and Nephi as they began their experience in their new land, the promised land.
And I believe that this promise exists today as we read the Book of Mormon in our lives. It's interesting because I see friends and close ones that choose to no longer keep their covenants. They choose to turn away from the Church.
They choose to turn away from living the Lord's commandments. And it's interesting how quickly things fall apart when it comes to the commandments of God. I don't see people that just leave the Church and continue living their lives the same way, other than going to Church.
Instead, what I see is the second half of this: I see them cut off from the presence of the Lord. When people choose to leave, they choose to leave the Word of Wisdom. They choose to leave the Law of Chastity.
They choose to leave the Law of Tithing. It's interesting. I have a lot of good friends outside of the Church.
Yet, because of the choices they made, because they have not kept the commandments and the covenants they made with the Lord, they are cut off from the presence of the Lord. My friends, stay on the covenant path. Keep your covenants.
Keep the commandments of the Lord, and allow His presence to be in your life. The world is already a difficult place to navigate. Do it with the help of the Lord, and you will be blessed.
That's not my promise. That's the promise you get in Alma chapter 9 and many other places inside the Book of Mormon, where the Lord promises us, if we keep the commandments, we will prosper in the land. That's the message from Alma today.
And that's all I have for today, my friends. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow, and I hope you are too.
