Day 78 Avoiding Casual or Complacent Faith
Full Transcript
In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.
Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I am cheering for your every success. Welcome to day 78 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon.
Today you're going to read, well you're going to finish a chapter and then you're going to move on to another one. You're going to read 2 Nephi 27:29-35 and then you're going to start into 2 Nephi 28:1-10. Today, we're going to dive into Nephi's version of what he sees in the future.
He explains things perhaps no less dark in terms of the challenges it is for the wicked and those that choose to reject the Lord and His commandments, but he does say it in a way that is a little bit more relatable for us rather than the way that Isaiah chooses to say it through the lens of a little bit of extra partying going on through the eating, drinking, and being merry. Perhaps they're all right with just a little bit of sin here in their life. And at the end of the day, God will say, "Oh, shame, shame, double shame on you," but come on in and be saved in the Kingdom of God.
And there are two words that come to mind throughout the rest of this chapter that Nephi uses to describe this type of mindset. He says it's foolish and it's false. And I think he's pretty direct in the thinking there.
But this approach got me thinking a little bit about a time in my life. I going to be talking about the Bible the Bible the Bible the Bible the Bible. Is always an option if we find ourselves casual or complacent in our relationship with the Lord.
Now there was a time I don't know if it was necessarily casual it may have been complacent, but there was a time where my wife and I had fallen behind on paying our tithing as a family and became kind of difficult to catch up. We couldn't catch up. We actually went in and we talked to our bishop and just let him know like, "Hey, we're behind and it's kind of rough." We don't know how to catch up here.
And that had probably come through some complacency in terms of budgeting and in terms of paying attention to where our tithes should go as we got our checks. And the bishop really challenged us to be able to do everything that we could to get our tithing back up to full tithe. And we committed to do that.
And we decided to take that challenge on in our lives. And it got to a point where Christmas was coming at that point. It was during the holiday season.
I know that the Lord wants us to have more than a casual or complacent relationship with Him. And that the second we try to increase that relationship, He's there for us. And I know that we have repentance as one of the paths that can help us do that.
So today, in your attempt to be a little bit of more savory salt, I'd encourage you to look at the places that you have a little bit of more casual or complacent aspects of your life in terms of the gospel. And that's all for today, my friends. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.
Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow. Hope you are too.
