Key Points
- Allen Roberds examines 2 Nephi 23:11, highlighting Isaiah's prophecy regarding the Lord's coming punishment for evil and the proud.
- The episode reframes the challenging nature of these Isaiah chapters, presenting divine warnings as a loving act, similar to a parent guiding a child away from danger.
- Nephi's inclusion of these warnings in the Book of Mormon serves as an encouragement for readers to keep their commandments and covenants for their spiritual safety.
- Modern missionary work is presented as an analogy for this loving warning, inviting individuals to find comfort and security in the Lord's path.
- Listeners are encouraged to appreciate the service of missionaries who help others embrace safety and peace during challenging times.
So perhaps, I'm just guessing here, but perhaps Nephi is saying, I love you enough to give you fair warning and to encourage you to keep the commandments and keep your covenants with the Lord.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.
Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I am cheering for your every success. Welcome to Day 69.
Today we are on, can you believe it? We got here. We're on the tail end of the Isaiah chapters.
We've only got a couple more left before Nephi dives in and gives us some more commentary. Today on your 365 day journey through the Book of Mormon, you're going to read with me 2 Nephi chapter 23. We've eaten a few of these chapters just whole the last couple of days, and this one's no different.
This one is an interesting perspective, and I had to pick one of these verses. This is a destructive chapter. The coming of the Lord brings destruction, and it can be disheartening sometimes.
But I think the idea I've got on the backside of it maybe will help at least a little bit. The verse for today comes from chapter 23, verse 11. And this is what the Lord says here through the lens of Isaiah's writings.
He says, And I will punish the world for evil and the wicked for their iniquity. I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease and will lay down the haughtiness of the terrible. Now, you may be pausing and saying, Allen, wow, you really picked a solid uplifting one today.
But here's my thoughts around this. You know, a lot of these chapters in Isaiah that Nephi shares with us have these challenging struggles. They have this view of the angry Lord, and they have this challenging perspective that there's doom and gloom to the wicked.
But as I reflected on why Nephi perhaps wanted to share these chapters with us, I thought of it through the lens of a parent or a loved one in this type of lens. And what I wanted to share with you here as he's talking about this punishment of the evil and the wicked, and "Look where you're going." I think there's something to be said with Nephi in that perspective as he shares the Isaiah chapters. He sees what Isaiah sees coming and he says, you know what?
I need to include this in my writings because we're in the car together and I see what's coming down the road and I'm going to give every possible warning I can to my loved ones. So perhaps, I'm just guessing here, but perhaps Nephi is saying, I love you enough to give you fair warning and to encourage you to keep the commandments and keep your covenants with the Lord. I love the missionary work today.
And I love it because this is really what missionaries are doing, isn't it? Missionaries are going out and saying, "Hey, the Lord's coming, and we want to invite you to be on the team. We want to invite you in the safety of the car, driving on the road that isn't dangerous ahead." I love the missionaries and their efforts.
And today, if you could find a missionary or in the next couple of days, find a missionary, high five them and just say, thank you for your service. This is what they're doing every day, is warning the people of the coming of the Lord and giving people an opportunity to feel the comfort of the Lord during these times of evil, wickedness, proud and haughtiness that surrounds us. Love your missionaries, tell them thank you, and give them a high five from me, will you?
That's all I have for today, my friends. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt.
I'll be here tomorrow. I hope you are too.
