3.249 His Covenant Love is For Us

In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to Him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as Savory Salt.

Hello, my friends. It's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve.

I can't believe it. We are at the end of the book of Psalms. I don't even know how to get all through any of these here as we've gone through.

There's so many that I start going, and I'm like, well, we could skip that. We could come back to this. And then I'm like, no, we can't skip that.

No, we have to. No, we've got to move on. And here we are.

I'm going to share today one more, but it's not going to be anywhere near the end of Psalm 150 here because there's just so much in here that's so rich, and I love the praises, and it's been uplifting to be here the past couple of weeks with you. Let's take a look at our verse for today in Psalm 136. Psalm 136 is an interesting one.

It basically—the Psalm itself—basically reviews kind of the first five books of the Old Testament. So, going through this, this writer of this one has gone through and basically kind of spot-checked the places where the Lord has shown up for the children of Israel. And then it sings His praises.

And yet, interestingly enough, in almost every verse in here, we get this. Let's do our verse for today, and then let's talk about this cool phrase. Psalm 136, verse 1, right off the beginning of it, it says, "O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endureth forever." Now that one sounds like many of the other psalms we've covered, right?

Let's praise the Lord, let's say thanks, he is good and his mercy endureth forever. The cool thing about Psalm 136 is this mercy piece that endureth forever. The term "mercy" in Hebrew, at least specific to Psalm 136 here, the translation isn't necessarily mercy.

It's actually "His covenant love." So, I'm going to give you verse one again, and I want you to hear the difference in this: "O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good, for His covenant love endureth forever." Man, what an amazing switch there! The Lord absolutely is a Lord of covenants. He encourages us to make and keep covenants with Him so that our lives can be better.

I love that this goes through. It's a review of all the ways the Lord has blessed the people, but each time it talks about that blessing, it ends up with "His covenant love endureth forever." My friends, have you ever been in a situation and relied on a tight relationship to help you out? I can think of situations where there are those go-to people on your phone, right?

You've got something happening, you've got to dial someone, and you speed dial brother, sister, mom, dad, aunt, uncle, cousin, best friend, someone in another state, someone in another country, right? I think that's at least one way to see the term "His covenant love." He is our go-to in our times of trouble, in our times of rejoicing, in our ups and our downs. The Lord and His covenant love are available for us at all times, in all places.

I love that. My friends, I hope that you take an opportunity to seek out to continue to make and keep covenants with the Lord. If you don't know what that looks like, do some research in the Book of Mormon.

Do some research in the Old Testament. Do some research in the New Testament. Do some research in the Doctrine and Covenants.

Search what "covenant" means to the Lord. Search how He desires for you and for me to make those covenants. And I think the path will be illuminated for you.
