This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as Savory Salt.
Hello, my friends. It's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve.
It's been almost two years since I shared the verse that I've selected for today. I haven't wanted to be redundant inside Savory Salt, and I think two years is a good enough space and time to reference a Book of Mormon scripture, even though we're in the Book of Job this week. The reason I do so is kind of twofold.
One of them is with a bit of hesitancy, honestly. There's so much in the Book of Job that I was like, can I really take time to step away from Job and jump over to the Book of Mormon? But primarily one of the reasons is as a family, we discussed that we're kind of getting into the Old Testament doldrums a little bit.
We're kind of getting bogged down inside of the Old Testament studies. Book of Mormon, I need to share one here that I think is well placed inside of the Book of Job. So our reading today is going to come from the Book of Helaman chapter 12 inside of the Book of Mormon rather than inside of the Old Testament.
As I mentioned, I have referenced this verse before, although it was back in Savory Salt season one. And if you'd like to dive into the episode I'm referencing here, it's day 273 back in season one. But it is not season one, it's season three here at Savory Salt.
So let's see if I've grown in my perspective at all as we take a look at this verse. Again, through the lens of Job. Helaman chapter 12 verse 2 says: Yea, and we may see at the very time when he doth prosper his people, yea, in the increase of their fields, their flocks, and their herds, and in gold, and in silver, and in all manner of precious things of every kind and art, sparing their lives, and delivering them out of the hands of their enemies, softening the hearts of their enemies, that they should not declare wars against them, yea, and in fine, doing all things for the welfare and happiness of their people.
Now you may be wondering here why would I select this one with the story of Job. He was absolutely well prospered and well blessed and he did experience the chastening side of the Lord and didn't forget the Lord. So why would we make this connection?
Well, I think what was stuck back in my mind was the idea in verse 3 that the Lord chastens his people to help them remember who he is. Otherwise, they tend to forget. I love the story of Job in that he goes through the challenges he goes through and never forgets the Lord.
But then I wanted to be kind of a precursor to even Job's instances. What came through my mind here this time in reading verse 2 was that we have been excessively blessed in the world today, regardless of the country you live in. Everywhere around the world is increasing in wealth and abundance.
Healthcare generally across the world is better than it was 100-200 years ago in any given part of the world. On day 273 two seasons ago, I encouraged you to give prayers where you simply focus on gratitude to the Lord for what he blessed you with in your life. This time I'd like you to consider all of the different ways that the Lord has spared your life literally and figuratively.
Consider the ways that he has lifted you up and prospered you. See the Lord's hand in your life, directly and indirectly. I'm going to read this passage to you as a reminder that, through all of his challenges, he never forgot who truly blessed him in the first place and kept to his covenants that the Lord had in store for him.
May we do the same in good times and in bad is our hope for us today. That is all for today my friends. You and I have come here for such a time as this.
