Allen Roberds explores Alma 31:5, revealing how the Word of God possesses a power greater than any weapon. Drawing on examples like Alma and the historical account of Josiah, he illustrates how scripture can convert hearts, inspire repentance, and illuminate lives. This episode emphasizes the importance of sharing the transforming power of God's word with others.

Key Points

  • Alma 31:5 teaches that the Word of God has a more powerful effect upon the minds of people than even the sword itself.
  • The episode highlights Alma's decision to preach the word as the most effective way to help people repent and turn to the Lord.
  • The story of Josiah finding the lost scriptures in 2 Kings exemplifies the transformative power of God's word to restore covenants and faith among a people who had strayed.
  • Listeners are encouraged to test the virtue and power of God's word and to share it with family and friends to inspire spiritual growth and produce good fruit.

My friends, the words of our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are indeed powerful. May we bear testimony of them. May we share those words to our family members and friends, whether they've fallen away or whether they are currently active with us as well. May we share them often and be comfortable and lean into the faith that those words will plant their seeds and grow good fruit, is my hope today.

In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to Him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as Savory Salt.

Hello, my friends. It's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve.

What could possibly be more powerful than the weapons that man creates? We've all seen the movies. Whenever you're threatened, you're threatened because there's some sort of weapon involved.

Perhaps today we get a little bit of a different perspective and warning here. I might ruffle a couple feathers, but I do it in love, I hope, and hopefully with the Spirit, as always, my plan and my desire. My friends, before we get into our reading in 2 Kings chapter 16 through 25, I know we didn't start it yesterday.

We started with "The Hope of Israel" by President Nelson. We're going to also shift gears here and go over to the Book of Mormon in the book of Alma for our verse for today. And then we're going to get into our readings as we get into 2 Kings 16 through 25.

So I promise we're getting there. There's just a couple of foundational pieces I wanted to get into place. The first one about being a part of the gathering of Israel after all of its scattering that happens inside of the Old Testament.

The second foundation I wanted to put in place here is the power that comes from the Word of God. And I think Alma chapter 31 is a wonderful place to start talking about that. Alma, if you can remember, we're going to shift gears here.

It's been a while since we were in the Book of Mormon. In this section, Alma is going to go and preach and he's trying to remember and figure out how he can help convert the people and remind them that repentance is an important part of their lives and that they want to have the Lord in their lives. And he thinks about these different ways and he decides, "Wait a second, why don't I just preach?" And that's what we get inside of Alma chapter 31 verse 5.

He says this in verse 5, or the verse says this, I should say. The Word of God. My friends, this is such a powerful verse, and we're going to see the reason I plant this one here is, as we get into our stories with Hezekiah and Josiah, especially with Josiah, we are going to see the power—the virtue—of the Word of God in real time with the people of Josiah, especially.

They had lost the Word of God. They had lost their scriptures. They weren't living a life where they could read the scriptures.

They weren't living commandments and covenants from the scriptures. They had gone astray. And what is Josiah going to do?

He's going to stand up when he finds them and he's just going to read them word for word to the people. I'm going to read a little bit of this. Able to open the door for them to feel the Spirit again and turn their hearts and their minds to our Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ?

My friends, I know that's a difficult area. And again, I absolutely would encourage you to lean into the Spirit in that direction. I would encourage you not to lean into it with a spirit of fear, worried about what someone in the family might say because you wanted to bury your testimony.

Instead, try the virtue of the Word of God. Test its power. Alma found that "it was a more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword itself." My friends, the words of our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are indeed powerful.

May we bear testimony of them. May we share those words to our family members and friends, whether they've fallen away or whether they are currently active with us as well. May we share them often and be comfortable and lean into the faith that those words will plant their seeds and grow good fruit, is my hope today.

That's all for today, my friends. You and I have come here for such a time as this. Step forward in faith and let's be savory salt. We will be here tomorrow and we hope you are too.
