Show Notes

In this Savory Salt episode, Allen Roberds delves into Deuteronomy 15:1, exploring the biblical concept of "release" every seven years. He reflects on how this ancient principle, tied to the scriptural significance of the number seven representing completion, might apply to our personal journey toward spiritual wholeness and intentional rest.

Key Points

  • Deuteronomy 15:1 introduces the commandment for a 'release' at the end of every seven years.
  • The number seven in scripture often symbolizes completion, wholeness, or rest, as seen in the Lord resting on the seventh day.
  • Allen ponders if achieving personal wholeness, or becoming more like the Lord, involves actively practicing release and rest rather than constant striving.
  • The concept of 'release' can be viewed introspectively as a form of pardoning or canceling burdens in our own lives.
  • Applying the principle of rest and release, similar to observing the Sabbath, is proposed as a vital step on the path to spiritual completion and becoming whole.

Perhaps, on our path of becoming whole like the Lord through this concept of whether it's seven days and practicing rest on the Sabbath, seven months, seven years, whatever it may be, perhaps an opportunity for us to make sure that we are resting and releasing as part of that.

In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as Savory Salt.

Hello, my friends. It's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom ye will serve.

I've got one today that I just don't have a clear answer for, but it's a place I wanted to record and capture so that I can come back and reflect. I want you to come along on this journey with me. My friends, we're reading the Book of Deuteronomy as Moses prepares his final days here and gives his final testimony and counsel to the Israelites.

Our verse for today is going to come in Deuteronomy Chapter 15. And forgive me if I kind of stumble over this one because, like I said, I don't know if I've got it entirely, but I want to capture this thought that I keep stewing on. Deuteronomy 15, verse 1 says, "At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release." Now I know there's not a whole lot of spirituality to this one in its original reading here.

But if you look into the footnotes here, what in the world am I doing here and where am I trying to go with this? Let me try and get you caught up to where my brain is. I promise it's coming.

First of all, this concept of seven throughout scripture fascinates me. The idea of completion as the Lord rested on the seventh day and made the earth whole, right? This one is interesting to me because it's kind of posed a question in my mind that again, I can't answer.

But this is the best I can put together right now. Perhaps part of this idea of completion or complete or becoming whole like the Lord has encouraged us to become, perhaps part of that is in the release or the rest that the Lord did on the seventh day. This release, this idea of pardoning and canceling debts perhaps could be an introspective look for us as well.

I know that I get caught up in the concept of, you know, working hard for my salvation and working hard in all ways in my life. Sometimes I have days where I'm, you know, up at 6 a.m. and going until 2 a.m. the next morning, just working. Perhaps part of becoming like the Lord here, for me, is in this concept of this release every seven years.

I'm not saying seven years literally for me. I'm saying part of this idea that the Lord encourages us to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I can be better here, and I wanted to just drop this idea here in case it helps you as well.

Perhaps, on our path of becoming whole like the Lord through this concept of whether it's seven days and practicing rest on the Sabbath, seven months, seven years, whatever it may be, perhaps an opportunity for us to make sure that we are resting and releasing as part of that. Thank you for watching. Thanks for watching!
