3.110 Wonder, Amazement, and Anger
Show Notes
Allen Roberds reflects on Mosiah 13:8, exploring the diverse human reactions—wonder, amazement, and anger—to hearing the word of the Lord and testimony. This episode encourages listeners to actively engage with scripture and prophetic counsel, striving to cultivate a spirit of wonder and amazement over anger in their spiritual journey.
Key Points
- The episode encourages listeners to assess their spiritual journey and how their scripture study and relationship with the Lord have deepened.
- Allen Roberds focuses on Mosiah 13:8, where Abinadi observes that his words evoke wonder, amazement, and anger among his listeners.
- The reflection prompts listeners to consider their own personal reactions to hearing testimonies and prophetic words, from curiosity and spiritual confirmation to frustration or anger.
- Listeners are invited to consciously choose to lean towards wonder and amazement rather than anger when engaging with the word of the Lord and the testimonies of His servants.
I hope that we can encourage our own thought processes and our hearts and our minds to turn towards the spectrum of perhaps wonder and amazement rather than that of anger when we hear the word of the Lord and when we hear testimonies borne of him.

In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to Him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as Savory Salt.
Hello, my friends, it's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve. My friends, the hundred days into this season just blew right past.
I didn't even realize that we were 110 days into season three of Savory Salt. At this stage, it's time for a little bit of a checkup from the neck up. Did you do some of the activities we encouraged you to do last week?
Or did you just listen? How has your scripture study and relationship with the Lord changed as a result of listening to Savory Salt? Remember that we're trying to increase every day our relationship with the Lord, not just be passive passengers on this journey.
So hopefully at this stage of the season, as you're listening, you can pause, take some time to reflect on what it's doing with you and your relationship with the Lord. Our reading this week, as we begin a new week, is kind of an interesting one. I'm only going to give this once or twice to start off the week because it's such an interesting collection through Come Follow Me.
But it is Exodus 19 and 20, 24 and then 31 through 34. I would strongly suggest that you read Exodus 19 through 34, as there are some chapters inside of them. We have a link up here that may sound very, very familiar to some of you that have been able to do your own work and work for others inside of the temple, the house of the Lord.
As we dive in today, even though the readings are scattered and all over the place, we're actually going to turn to Mosiah chapter 13 for our reading for the day. I'll make sure that that link goes to Mosiah 13 today as we dive in. The reason I chose this—yes, it is a review of the Ten Commandments, which we're going to get inside of Exodus.
It's not for the review piece, it's actually for the piece that Abinadi shares before he goes into the review of the Ten Commandments. And I thought, you know, that sentence there is interesting to me, and perhaps it's one worth diving into Savory Salt. Let's take a look at our verse for today: Mosiah chapter 13, verse 8.
Abinadi is speaking to these priests and to the king himself. He is testifying. They are angry, and he says this before getting into his review of the commandments: "Yea, and my words fill you with wonder and amazement and with anger." Isn't that an interesting spectrum for Abinadi to share when it comes to hearing the word of the Lord, or hearing someone bear testimony of the reality of the Lord?
Wonder, amazement, and anger. I paused inside of that and I reflected in my own life at times when I've heard a living prophet speak, or a living apostle, or leadership inside the church, or someone bearing their testimony on Fast Sunday. All of those, you know, whenever I'm hearing testimony borne, wonder came to mind, and I thought, "That's interesting." Do you ever hear testimonies and go, "Oh, you know what?
I don't have the answer to that, but I wonder if." The next one is amazement. I know I've had times where I've been overcome with the Spirit. At what I'm listening to, I can think particularly of a moment hearing President Hinckley speak.
More than just hesitancy, you're frustrated or angry at the word of the Lord. My friends, I give this at the beginning of these chapters for us to remember that the Lord is mindful of us as he shares his word and as he sends his prophets and apostles to speak to us and to testify. I hope that we can encourage our own thought processes and our hearts and our minds to turn towards the spectrum of perhaps wonder and amazement rather than that of anger when we hear the word of the Lord and when we hear testimonies borne of him.
That's all for today, my friends. You and I have come here for such a time as this. Step forward in faith, and let's be Savory Salt. We will be here tomorrow and we hope you are too.
