Show Notes

Discover the powerful story of Aaron and Hur in Exodus 17:12, where they steadfastly supported Moses' weary arms during battle. This episode explores the vital importance of mutual support, sustaining church leaders, and finding ways to uplift those around us, just as Aaron and Hur did for the prophet Moses.

Key Points

  • The episode highlights the unsung heroes Aaron and Hur, who ensured Moses' hands remained steady during the battle in Exodus 17.
  • Listeners are encouraged to apply the principle of Aaron and Hur by actively sustaining and supporting church leaders, both locally and globally.
  • The reflection challenges us to identify opportunities to support others in our daily lives, taking a cue from the selfless service of Aaron and Hur.
  • The episode also acknowledges that sometimes we are like Moses, in need of others to help 'hold up our hands' during difficult times.

I hope that you and I can take a page out of their book and find those in our lives that we can better support, steady, and help stay up their hands going forward.

In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to Him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as Savory Salt.

Hello, my friends. It's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve.

You know who doesn't get enough shout outs inside of these stories with the children of Israel? Aaron and Hur. So let's talk about Aaron and Hur today.

This episode is dedicated to them. We are reading this week Exodus chapters 14 through 18. I hope you're enjoying these readings because these are some key essential pieces, very common stories when it comes to the Old Testament and the children of Israel as they escape from Egypt and get into the wilderness for 40 years.

It's inside of this story in Exodus 17 that I want to pick up after our discussion yesterday about murmuring and come instead into the side of supporting each other. At the tail end of Exodus 17. And so it becomes important for Moses to keep his hands up.

And that takes us to verse 12 here, when Aaron and Hur step into the story. Verse 12 says, "But Moses' hands were heavy, and they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat thereon. Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side and the other on the other side, and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun." Now, my friends, how many different ways can we be like Aaron and Hur when it comes to supporting others in our lives?

One of the most common ways that this story is used is when it comes to sustaining and supporting our church leaders both locally and globally from our bishops and branch presidents, our stake presidents all the way up to regional leaders and ultimately to be able to sustain our prophet and president of the church who today as of this recording is President Oaks. That's one example, but I think this story has more to it. Aaron and Hur support Moses here and they do so.

We don't see any sort of delay here. We know that Aaron is a support to Moses regularly throughout these stories. And so what does it mean for us in other ways?

I think sometimes we see ourselves in this story as Moses. We're the ones trying to hold our hands up and we're looking around at everybody saying, "Is anybody going to come help hold my arms up?" Right? Like we're the Moseses of the story.

And look, sometimes as heads of households or sometimes as About Aaron and Hur. Two unlikely heroes, ones that are not talked about often and yet fulfilled their duty here in supporting and sustaining Moses, the prophet of their day. I hope that you and I can take a page out of their book and find those in our lives that we can better support, steady, and help stay up their hands going forward.

That's all for today, my friends. You and I have come here for such a time as this. Step forward in faith, and let's be savory salt. We will be here tomorrow and we hope you are too.
