Show Notes

Explore the profound lessons from Genesis 13:12 where Lot "pitched his tent toward Sodom," serving as a powerful metaphor for our life's direction. Host Allen Roberds emphasizes that what we focus on expands, encouraging listeners to intentionally direct their lives toward Christ rather than worldly influences, reflecting on the consequences of Lot's choices.

Key Points

  • Genesis 13:12 describes Lot's choice to pitch his tent toward Sodom, foreshadowing the profound consequences of his direction.
  • The episode uses Lot's decision as a powerful metaphor to discuss the critical importance of the spiritual direction we face in our own lives.
  • A core principle is introduced: 'what we focus on matters because it expands in our lives,' influencing whether challenges or blessings multiply.
  • Listeners are encouraged to consciously choose to direct their focus toward Christ, apostles, and prophets, rather than the 'wickedness, challenges, and dirtiness of the world'.
  • The reflection prompts a daily consideration of our spiritual trajectory, urging us to decide which way we will 'pitch our tent'.

The one message I want to emphasize is the idea of the direction we're facing. You see, I learned a principle in my life that is, yes, spiritual, but it is also in every aspect of my life. That principle is this: what we focus on matters because it expands in our lives.

In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to Him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as Savory Salt.

Hello, my friends. It's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve.

Let's do a flashback to Savory Salt season one, shall we? Which direction is your tent pitched? We're reading this week Genesis chapters 12 through 17 as well as Abraham chapters 1 and 2.

And inside of this, we don't get the second half of the story. It's a shout out and a flashback to season one of Savory Salt, specifically day 105. I'll make sure that there's a link if you want to go and listen to the other side of the story about pitching your tent.

Our verse for today is Genesis chapter 13, verse 12. We have Abraham and Lot here, and they are dividing their lands because they have so much abundance that they need to live further apart. And Lot has chosen the more plentiful side of the land, which Abraham had been fine with.

And then verse 12 here gives us a little bit of insight into the direction that Lot's headed in his own life. Verse 12 says: "Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom." Now that would be the same Sodom as in Sodom and Gomorrah, which, if we know our Old Testament stories just a little bit, we're going to remember, it was completely wiped off the face of the earth due to their wickedness by the Lord. And so we have this end story here.

Now we don't know yet, and I'm not going to go fast forward into it. We don't know yet what the consequences of Lot's choice are here in terms of turning and pitching his tent towards Sodom. But if we go back to season one, day 105, we remember the King Benjamin reference and the direction that those people pitched their tent.

The one message I want to emphasize is the idea of the direction we're facing. You see, I learned a principle in my life that is, yes, spiritual, but it is also in every aspect of my life. That principle is this: what we focus on matters because it expands in our lives.

If we focus on the challenges that we're facing in our lives, those challenges seem to expand, multiply, and, boy, do they add up quickly. We know that because we have phrases in our own speaking that say things like, "Well, you know, when it rains, it pours." Basically saying, "Hey, if you're having a crappy day, just plan on having another one and another one." Right? We've had those experiences.

But, my friends, that doesn't have to be the way it is. You see, if what we focus on matters because it expands, we also could focus on the love of our Savior, which would only expand our ability to feel His love in our lives. We could focus on the opportunities that we have to serve others, even others who maybe are having a more difficult time than we are in our lives.

At which point, the opportunities to serve others will be expanded. We see more opportunities to serve, and in doing so, we also receive more service to us. Now, I can exactly explain how I know that this principle works and is true, but I can look at moments in my life where I realize what I'm focusing on.

My friends, I hope that you and I take an opportunity to decide which way we're going to pitch the tent. Would we like to pitch the tent towards Sodom, the wickedness, the challenges, the sinners, the dirtiness of the world in that direction? Or would we like to pitch our tent towards apostles, prophets, and, ultimately, the light and life of our Savior, Jesus Christ?

I think you know my choice, or at least the choice I try to make every day, and I hope I know your choice and try to make that every day as well. That's all for today, my friends. You and I have come here for such a time as this.

Step forward in faith and let's be savory salt. We will be here tomorrow, and we hope you are too.
