In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth and the light of the world, reminding us that our lives are meant to preserve, illuminate, and point others to Him. This season on Savory Salt, we'll walk through the Old Testament, one verse and one thought each day. Perhaps these moments will add greater savor and brighter light to our lives as we seek to truly live as savory salt.
Hello, my friends, it's a new day with new opportunities. Choose ye this day whom you will serve. Do you remember that Old Testament—First Testament conversation we had a few weeks ago?
Let's have it again. We've been reading this week Genesis chapters 3 and 4 and Moses chapters 4 and 5. And while I've tried to stay mostly inside of the Genesis chapters throughout Savory Salt, I couldn't help but dive into the Moses side of things, which really is considered Old Testament as well.
It's just through Moses's experience rather than Moses writing it as it is in Genesis. In Moses chapter 5, we get perhaps the biggest chunk of added content. I don't know that scientifically, but it sure seems like it.
The differences from Genesis chapter 4. And so, in Moses 5, we get this deeper lens into what happened with Adam and Eve and their experience with the Lord, especially when it comes to leaving the Garden of Eden and starting their life here on the earth with their children. It's inside of this context that we see a testimony here.
We see the Lord bearing testimony. Okay, our verse for today comes inside of Moses chapter 5, and it's verse 7. Before we read it, understand that this is the middle of a scene happening with Adam and Eve.
So make sure that you kind of get all the things happening here. But this is the middle of the scene, so to speak, as it's playing out. And then the angel spake, saying, "This thing is a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father, which is full of grace and truth." Now, when you dig into it, it does seem quite weird.
It seems a little bit off that the book of Genesis would be missing entirely a conversation with an angel, especially one testifying of Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten of the Father. And so, we lean on this modern revelation that comes through with the book of Moses and see here that Adam and Eve not only understood the plan of salvation and understood that they were on earth to be able to seek joy and see the face of God again in their lives, but they also clearly understood that the way that was going to happen was through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten. I think it's amazing to think back to Adam and Eve, who are at that time living several thousand years before Jesus Christ, and they're having an opportunity through angelic intervention to understand that Christ is going to come and sacrifice himself.
That had to have changed the way that they were performing sacrifices as they had been required. We certainly do see that Adam gets a better understanding of it through this conversation. My friends, keep the context of Jesus Christ as we go through the Old Testament. Remember that this Testament is the First Testament of Jesus Christ and find Him inside of your gospel study.
