In Matthew 5:13, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth, a bold reminder that our lives are meant to carry his flavor, his truth, and his love to the world. Join me each day to explore one verse of scripture and one thought, striving to stay full of savor and truly live as savory salt. Hello, my friends.
It's great to have you with me. Today, let's be anxiously engaged in a good cause and bring to pass much righteousness. Who doesn't love an underdog story, especially one where the underdog totally comes out on top?
I find myself cheering for underdog teams sometimes in sporting events that I have like no buy-in at all. I just see who's the underdog and I start cheering. That is a message we all can take a look at today.
We're reading this week Doctrine and Covenants sections 133 through 134, as well as Mormon chapters 3 through 6. Let's take a look at the underdog verse for today and see what it can mean for us. Let's look at Doctrine and Covenants 133:59.
By the way, 133 is awesome. I hope you enjoy the verses. If you want to know what it looks like, sounds like, feels like when the Savior comes, take some time to dive into 133 for sure.
Verse 59 is the middle of that, and it says: "And by the weak things of the earth the Lord shall thresh the nations by the power of his Spirit." Now, that's quite an interesting term. It's a term that I believe — and we are going to have a mini history lesson here for two seconds. I believe "thresh" would be an intentional choice of verbiage from the Lord for the people of that time period.
So, we're sitting inside of, you know, the 1830s, 1840s, that all of these are written. This one's early on, 1830s, right? But threshing... you've got a common farming is super common, an agrarian society.
Thank you for joining us today. Names is the ultimate underdog story here, right? I don't know if, like when I was a kid, I was a...
I can remember, like, oh, what are some of them? "The Mighty Ducks." I always liked "The Mighty Ducks" as a kid. I haven't watched these movies in 30, 40 years, right? I don't even know.
But "The Mighty Ducks," this... this rabble group of kids that come together and end up, you know, winning in the hockey league. Spoiler alert from 30 years ago, or 40 years ago, whatever it is. We love the underdog story.
One of my favorites when it comes to comic books, for sure. My girls would know this, but like, we had Captain America, right? And he's this tiny, skinny kid.
He doesn't even get allowed to be in the army, and he just wants to help and he wants to serve, and he's always beat up and he's always picked on. And then, and then he gets selected to become Captain America. Okay, so this... this is our story.
If you ever feel like you're the underdog, if you ever feel like you're outcast because you're a member of the church, if you ever feel like you're deliberately selected separately. Thank you for watching. I'm going to use you to thresh the earth.
The nations. I'm going to use you to separate the useful from the wasteful. And how's it going to be done?
It's going to be done by the power of His Spirit. My friends, you and I have a role to play. We may be down sometimes, we may be separated sometimes, we may be outcast sometimes, but we have a role to play if we stay with the Lord.
And I believe that the Lord will find us, as we're continuing this path of savory salt, very, very useful in the day of threshing. That's all for today, my friends. Lift up your hearts and rejoice and cheer for the underdog.
Cleave unto the covenants you have made, and together we will be savory salt. For more information, visit us at www.fema.org.
