2.291 Let Your Light So Shine
Show Notes
In this episode, Allen Roberds reflects on 3 Nephi 12:16, "Let your light so shine," connecting it to Matthew 5:13's call to be the "salt of the earth." He explores how Christ invites us to be our best selves, inspiring others through our good works and glorifying our Father in Heaven.
Key Points
- Jesus calls believers to be the 'salt of the earth' and 'let their light so shine,' carrying His truth and love to the world.
- The 'Sermon on the Mount' in both Matthew and 3 Nephi emphasizes striving to be our best selves, which is fully realized through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
- Living righteously and being excellent allows others to see our good works and glorify God.
- Christ's invitation to 'let your light shine' is a call to be amazing, exceptional, and the best version of ourselves.
- We can seek and ask the Lord for help in becoming the best version of ourselves, fulfilling His divine invitation.
I love that the Lord invites us to be excellent. I love that the Lord invites us to be the best version of us. And I love that if we will ask Him and seek Him, He will help us be the best version of ourselves.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth, a bold reminder that our lives are meant to carry his flavor, his truth, and his love to the world. Join me each day to explore one verse of scripture and one thought, striving to stay full of savor and truly live as savory salt. Hello my friends, it's great to have you with me.
Today let's be anxiously engaged in a good cause and bring to pass much righteousness. You know, Savory Salt almost wasn't. We're reading this week Doctrine and Covenants sections 115 through 120, as well as 3 Nephi chapters 11-14, and I want to go back to Doctrine and Covenants but I just can't bring myself to do it.
I love the chapters inside of 11. You've got the coming of Jesus Christ, you've got him calling his 12, and then chapters 12, 13, and 14 are basically the "Sermon on the Mount" for the Nephites, right? And so that, as I always say at the beginning of Savory Salt episodes, that the "Sermon on the Mount" is right where Savory Salt comes from.
And today I wanted to take it and say, you know what, Savory Salt's only one example, but Savory Salt almost never existed. Let's take a look at the verse and then let me kind of fill that in just a little bit. Our verse for the day is 3 Nephi 12:16.
It says, therefore, let your light so shine before this people. The Lord uses so many different ways to invite us to be our best selves. And our best selves come into full fruition with the atonement of Jesus Christ in our lives.
Now, what does that have to do with savory salt? Well, as I was trying to consider what to do with this podcast two years ago almost now, and I was debating what it was gonna look like, sound like, feel like, I was stuck on what it would be, and this section just kept repeating in my mind. Whether it was the Matthew version or the 3 Nephi version, they're very, very similar, right?
Pretty much word for word in many sections here. This is an opportunity for us to go out into the world, be our best selves, invite the Holy Ghost to be with us, always live worthy, always as best as we can, repent when we make mistakes, and do it so that the world can look and say, "What's different about you?" What's different about you? I don't know if you've ever experienced that.
I've been asked that question at different points in my life. I think I've shared a couple of those stories. My friends, I love Jesus Christ's invitation to let your light shine.
Be amazing, be exceptional, be the best version of you. Because when you are, people will see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. They will say something different about you.
I love that the Lord invites us to be excellent. I love that the Lord invites us to be the best version of us. And I love that if we will ask Him and seek Him, He will help us be the best version of ourselves.
So whether I missed the shot at calling the podcast, I don't know, let your light shine. I might've missed the boat there, but Savory Salt is what it is. Whether it's Savory Salt, whether it's letting our light shine, Christ invites us to be our best either way.
So today, be your best in everything you do. That's all for today, my friends. Lift up your hearts and rejoice. Cleave unto the covenants you have made, and together we will be Savory Salt.
