In Matthew 5:13, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth, a bold reminder that our lives are meant to carry his flavor, his truth, and his love to the world. Join me each day to explore one verse of scripture and one thought, striving to stay full of savor and truly live as savory salt. Hello, my friends.
It's great to have you with me. Today, let's be anxiously engaged in a good cause and bring to pass much righteousness. Can we bear our testimonies too much?
We're reading this week Doctrine and Covenants, sections 111 through 114, as well as 3 Nephi, chapters 6 through 10. We've already been in each of those areas, and today we're going to dive into Doctrine and Covenants, section 112. We're going to actually spend today and tomorrow inside of that section.
It's an interesting one because we have Thomas B. Marsh, who's at that time the head of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. And he's receiving this revelation, some counsel about where he's going to go forward and serve.
And some of these, it's really interesting in Doctrine and Covenants because sometimes I feel like these are so personal to the person that requested these that I go, "Oh gosh, did they know that they were going to have these eternally written down in scriptures that would be read over and over and over again by members of the Church around the world?" I don't know whether they did or didn't, but there are some pieces in here that are absolutely worth us taking a look at when it comes to counsel from the Lord to these early Saints. The first one for today comes in Doctrine and Covenants section 112, verse 5. He's explaining, the Lord explaining here to Thomas B.
Marsh, what it's going to look like to be an apostle and go out and spread the word. He says this: "Let not the inhabitants of the earth slumber because of thy speech." Now, if we're taking this literally, perhaps Thomas is sitting there hearing this revelation and going, "Wait a second, do I ever get to sleep?" I'm going to go and bear testimony morning by morning, day after day, and even in the night, I'm going to not let anybody take a nap or sleep because I just continue testifying of Jesus Christ. Now that got me thinking about these very scriptures, the very thought that I just had at the front end of this.
As I mentioned, you know, did these people realize that their counsel was going to be immortalized here and canonized inside of the modern day scriptures that we have? But I also thought, what does this mean for us and bearing our testimonies? What does this mean for us being a voice of warning today?
How do we do that 24/7? And so I thought maybe a little too literally about this, but I actually have a few ideas that I think I settled on that may open the door for each of us to follow this counsel from the Lord and to do so with our loved ones and our neighbors and our friends and our family. The first one that came to mind is obviously modern technology of a YouTube channel, of podcasting, the things I'm doing here inside of Savory Salt, right?
One of the things I love about this and one of the things I've loved to see as I share these thoughts is I love looking not to see how many people are downloading this. I love looking at where it's being downloaded. Savory Salt has now been, at least continent-wise, everywhere around the world except for Antarctica.
Hasn't been to every country by any means, but I love seeing the countries that it has been downloaded in. Because while I'm slumbering, somebody else has an opportunity to hear my voice and to hear the testimony that I bear. And I love that in a marketing term, we use the content term, "evergreen," because my voice is just available on demand around the world.
But not everybody's going to start a YouTube channel. Not everybody's going to start a podcast. And that's okay.
Because a couple other things that came to mind that you could absolutely apply in your life here and now is journaling. And you say, "Well, how's my journal going to be available?" Well, at some point, whether you're alive or whether you're passed on, someone will come across those journals and have an opportunity to read your voice regardless of day or time of day or night or evening or morning or whether they read through the night. So journaling is an opportunity to "let thy warning voice go forth." The light of the gospel of Jesus Christ can be shared with others 24/7.
So, can we absolutely share our testimony too much? I don't think so. I think the more we record it, the more we can share it.
And I think the more we can share it, the more others are invited to share theirs as well. I love the gospel of Jesus Christ. I love to share it with others.
And I'm grateful for the technology around us that allows us to do so 24/7, morning, day, evening, night. That's all for today, my friends. Lift up your hearts and rejoice. Cleave unto the covenants you have made and together we will be savory salt.
