In Matthew 5:13, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth, a bold reminder that our lives are meant to carry his flavor, his truth, and his love to the world. Join me each day to explore one verse of scripture and one thought, striving to stay full of savor and truly live as savory salt. Hello, my friends.
Great to have you with me. Today, let's be anxiously engaged in a good cause and bring to pass much righteousness. I know I dumped a lot on you yesterday.
I would say I'm sorry, but I'm actually not. If you would dive into those resources, oh, my goodness, such amazing things yesterday. I hope that one is one of those episodes that gets shared by others.
I don't know. Sometimes those episodes just get shared with other people. And I hope that one with those resources becomes one that you like.
I like that one. It edifies me, and that means it builds and enlightens me. Now I promised inside of our reading of Doctrine and Covenants 49 and 50 that we were going to go back to back in verses today.
You're also, by the way, going to be reading this week, Mosiah 21 through 25. Don't forget those. We're going to get those here coming up in the next couple of days.
Our verse for today then, no surprise if you listened to yesterday, is Doctrine and Covenants section 50, verse 24. Now remember, this section is dedicated specifically to helping us identify the spirits that serve God and the spirits that don't serve God. And we are told that they are here on the earth.
So this is a chance for us to learn how to not be deceived. One of the aspects of that that we just learned yesterday is the edification comes from God. Other words for edification: reminder, build, enlighten, and instruction.
Today our verse is going to focus on this piece of enlighten and enlightenment. Let's take a look at verse 24 and see what we can get from it. It says this: That which is of God is light, and he that receiveth light and continueth in God receiveth more light, and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.
Now, my friends, did you catch the equation in there? That which is of God is light. There's like one plus; and he that receiveth the light — one plus one — and continueth in God — plus one, one plus one plus one here — receiveth more light.
So now we're sitting here and we're saying, "Wait, I want more light in my life." There's a lot of frustration in the world. There's a lot of confusion in the world. There's a lot of things going a lot of different directions, and I think that it's very dark.
Maybe that's what you're thinking, or maybe you're just having a personal difficult day. But we have the equation here for more light in our lives. That which is of God.
How much time do you spend with the things of God? Receive them, continue in them, and you receive more. Now, before it sounds super simple there, and before you just go, "Wait a second, Allen!
There's got to be more to it!" I want to share a quick example that I received as I reflected on what this looks like professionally in my life. I work with people that are building teams. I work with companies and leaders that are trying to build their own cultures to be positive and uplifting in a place where people like to come and work.
And I build families with positive cultures. These are the things that I do professionally. And I'm always amazed when people come and they hear a list of things to do.
And that always leaves me kind of befuddled a little bit because we could sit down right now, you and I could sit down right now and we could come up with just three things. We could come up with just three things. All right.
It's not about us finding the next thing that's not on the list. It's about us taking the things that we currently know and do. I love the example of people that are searching, and they're so excited and waiting for the day for more scriptures to be revealed.
Right? What about the sealed plates over here? What about these plates that the scriptures reference over there?
When are those going to be revealed? And yet, how much time do you and I spend in the current ones that we have? Why do we need more?
I've got hundreds of chapters of the Book of Mormon. I've got 138 sections of the Doctrine and Covenants, or whatever it is, right? I have a ton that I can dive into, that I can seek to improve my life with.
The Lord, I think, is trying to say, "Hey, find the light in me, receive it, continue in it." And that is where more light will come into your life. I love that equation. And I hope that you and I can remember that one as we continue to go forward, serving the Lord and seeking more light in our lives.
That's all for today, my friends. Lift up your hearts and rejoice. Cleave into the covenants you have made, and together we will be savory salt.
