2.119 I Want To Be A Disciple of Christ
Show Notes
Allen Roberds reflects on Doctrine and Covenants 41:5, defining what it truly means to be a disciple of Christ: not just receiving God's law, but actively doing it. This episode explores the intrinsic connection between learning and doing, emphasizing that genuine discipleship involves effort, potential failure, and the grace of repentance to continually live according to divine commandments.
Key Points
- Doctrine and Covenants 41:5 teaches that a true disciple is one who both receives God's law and diligently puts it into practice.
- The words 'disciple' and 'discipline' share a common Latin root, 'discere' (to learn), highlighting that learning and doing are inseparable in spiritual growth.
- Learning to live the gospel often involves failure, for which the Lord has provided repentance, much like how we learn physical skills such as walking or riding a bike.
- To become a disciple of Christ requires learning His teachings with the deliberate intent to apply and follow His commandments in all aspects of life.
I want to be a disciple of Christ. I want to be a learner and a doer of the things that he has commanded us to do.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus calls us the salt of the earth, a bold reminder that our lives are meant to carry his flavor, his truth, and his love to the world. Join me each day to explore one verse of scripture and one thought, striving to stay full of savor and truly live as savory salt. Hello, my friends, great to have you with me.
Today let's be anxiously engaged in a good cause and bring to pass much righteousness. You know that anxiously engaged in a good cause part? Let's take a look at one perspective of that today.
This week you're reading Doctrine and Covenants sections 41 to 44 inside of the law as well as Mosiah chapters 8 through 11. Our verse for today comes in Doctrine and Covenants, Section 41, which is kind of a precursor to Section 42, "the law." And there was a verse inside of there that we were talking about as a family the other night, and I thought, you know, this one's worth sharing and kind of just keeping a record of, sharing it to others as well. Our verse is in Doctrine and Covenants, Section 41, verse 5.
This is the Lord telling the elders that they should pray and seek for the word of the Lord and the law to come forth. And then when it comes forth, here's what they're supposed to do. Verse 5: "He that receiveth my law and doeth it, the same is my disciple; and he that saith he receiveth it and doeth it not, the same is not my disciple and shall be cast out from among you." And then it continues, going inside of the second part of that sentence.
This one was interesting to me because I remember reading or learning about the idea of disciple somewhere. And so it led me down the road to kind of consider this again. It's interesting here that the Lord says, "receiveth it and doeth it," right?
There's two parts here. It's not just enough to learn about it. We call this, I've mentioned this before, but we call this the performance gap, the gap between what you know.
And so here you have both of these words, disciple and discipline, interconnected. Both of them come from the same root in Latin. The root is *discere*, I think, which is to learn.
My friends, the Lord wants us to learn of him. And the best way we can learn is through. The best thing about doing is it brings with it failure, which is why the Lord has given us repentance.
If you think about the things that we've done in our lives, most of them we learned to do by failing. We learned to walk by failing. We learned to talk by failing.
We just blubbered our words until they finally became words. We fell down hundreds, thousands of times as children before we learned to walk. Our bike riding was from falling over.
And the Lord is saying, "Hey, be my disciple, come and learn and do the things you're learning." So as we dive into the law over the next couple of days, and also as you're listening to General Conference or studying or whatever it may be, don't just learn of him. Learn with the intent to do and follow. There is a powerful principle for all of us to take into applying to our lives to bring a little bit more savor to the salt of each one of us.
So my friends, I want you to know that I want to be a disciple of Christ. I want to be a learner and a doer of the things that he has commanded us to do. I hope you do as well.
That's all for today, my friends. Lift up your hearts and rejoice. Cleave unto the covenants you have made, and together we will be savory salt. For more information, visit www.savorysalt.org.
