Show Notes

Allen Roberds reflects on Ether 6:30, sharing Orihah's example of remembering and explicitly teaching God's miracles. This episode emphasizes the vital role of direct gospel instruction in preserving faith across generations and preventing the onset of the pride cycle detailed in Ether 7, urging listeners to teach the gospel explicitly.

Key Points

  • Orihah, son of Jared, walked humbly before the Lord and remembered the great things God had done for his father.
  • Orihah explicitly taught his people about the great things the Lord had done for their fathers, demonstrating the importance of direct instruction.
  • The episode highlights how the loss of explicit teaching across generations can lead to contention and the pride cycle, as seen shortly after Orihah's time in Ether 7.
  • Listeners are encouraged not only to live as an example of gospel principles but also to explicitly teach the gospel and remember God's miracles in their lives.

I think it's a lesson that you and I can take with us and encourage our children to take with them. And that is an opportunity to not just be an example of living the gospel, but to teach the gospel explicitly.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I'm cheering for your every success. How often do you share what you know?

Welcome to day 344 on our 365 day journey through the Book of Mormon together. Today, you're going to be reading Ether chapter 6, verses 26 to 30. You'll finish those last few verses there.

And Ether Chapter 7 verses 1 through 12. And inside of that you're going to see that very quickly we get into the pride cycle we talked about a few days ago as this goes from Jared and the brother of Jared and their beginnings of their civilization very quickly into kings overthrown by new kings overthrown by new kings overthrown by new kings. And that is going to be something we going to be talking about for the next couple of days and see what we can pull out of those verses.

Our verse for today comes out of the very tail end of Ether chapter 6. Inside of it we have the passing of Jared and the brother of Jared. And we have the beginning of, after a long list of no thank yous, we have one son willing to become king.

His name is Orihah. And in Ether chapter 6 verse 30, we learn a little bit about Orihah. It says, 'And it came to pass that Orihah did walk humbly before the Lord, and did remember how great things the Lord had done for his father, and also taught his people how great things the Lord had done for their fathers.' Now there's two interesting pieces here that we see out of verse 30.

We see that he remembers the miracles and the great things that the Lord had done for his dad. And then we see that he taught his people how great things the Lord had done for their fathers. So he knows it and he shares it.

And interestingly enough, as we dive into chapter seven, we see that by the third generation this is lost and it begins the battle of king seats as grandsons start to battle with cousins at that stage, right? And different grandsons. And then ultimately these people become divided.

So what happens here? We find out that Orihah knew, remembered, and taught. I think it's a lesson that you and I can take with us and encourage our children to take with them.

And that is an opportunity to not just be an example of living the gospel, but to teach the gospel explicitly. I hear a lot of parents that say that they try to do their best by living as an example of a follower of Jesus Christ. And I love that they're doing that.

And I also see parents that are missing the opportunity to explicitly teach and instruct their children. It seems here that Orihah did both of those. And yet somewhere inside of the first couple of verses of this summary in chapter 7, that explicit teaching to remember the Lord got dropped.

What happened there? We don't have the full details. But what we do seem to see is that the instruction of remembering the miracles of the Lord got left behind.

We also see inside of this a massive amount of success and prosperity happening at the same time. We know that for those that are familiar with the way that the Book of Mormon kind of writes itself. We know that is the pride cycle.

My friends, take an opportunity to not just acknowledge the miracles you have in your life, The Great Things the Lord Has Done for You. All we seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow and I hope you are too.
