Show Notes

Allen Roberds reflects on Helaman 1:18 from the Book of Mormon, exploring how political contention distracted the Nephites and led to neglected defenses. This episode encourages listeners to maintain spiritual focus and keep an "eye single to the glory of God," as taught in Doctrine and Covenants Section 4, to avoid similar distractions in their own lives.

Key Points

  • Helaman 1:18 describes how internal contention within the Nephite government led to their neglect of sufficient guards for the city of Zarahemla.
  • The episode emphasizes the danger of misplacing focus on worldly difficulties, which can lead to neglecting essential spiritual and personal safeguards.
  • Allen Roberds encourages listeners to cultivate an "eye single to the glory of God," a principle from Doctrine and Covenants Section 4, as a key to qualifying for divine work and maintaining perspective.
  • Daily scripture study, specifically through the Savory Salt podcast, is presented as a practical tool for keeping one's focus on Jesus Christ and living His gospel daily.

I want to encourage you and I want to encourage myself to keep your eyes single to the glory of God.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from, thank you for joining me. And know that I'm cheering for your every success. Where your focus goes, your energy flows.

Welcome to day 256 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon together. Today, you're going to be reading Helaman chapter 1, verses 13 through 34. You will finish that, and that's what takes us into our verse for today.

You're going to be reading Helaman chapter 1 verse 18 today. And what's happening here is another dissenter from the Nephites has gone over to the Lamanites. The King of the Lamanites has made him the head of the army to stir up the Lamanites.

Is this sounding familiar? This has been a repetitive nature now inside of what happens with the wars here. And then we get this verse here.

And it came to pass that because of so much contention and so much difficulty in the government, that they had not kept sufficient guards in the land of Zarahemla. For they had supposed that the Lamanites durst not come into the heart of their lands to attack that great city, Zarahemla. Now this one was an interesting one for me to kind of sit on.

In fact, the verses inside of here, I thought, "My goodness, there's so much kind of political description happening here that I tried to figure out what I can think into in this one." And here what I got: At the beginning of this verse, it says there was so much contention and so much difficulty in government that what happened? Their focus was so lasered in on the contention and the government that they stopped paying attention. They did not keep sufficient guards around the land of Zarahemla.

My friends, where are you focusing your attention? What are you focused on? It's a great question for me as I hold the mirror up and I say, Allen, what are you focused on?

Because if you can remember inside of Doctrine and Covenants Section 4, we're promised that the only thing that can help us to qualify inside of this work is an eye single to the glory of God. That's what qualifies us for the work. I shouldn't say only thing now that I think about it.

There's several pieces inside of Doctrine and Covenants 4. But an eye single to the glory of God qualifies us for the work. And I want to encourage you and I want to encourage myself to keep your eyes single to the glory of God.

This daily repetition now that has been with Savory Salt for now two of the year. It's so helpful to me to focus in and to read the words of God, to read the words of the prophets, and to try to keep my eyes focused on Jesus Christ and his gospel and doing the best I can to live that gospel every day, to follow the commandments, to do the things that I feel I can do to help in my life, whatever small way I can, to bring about the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. That's all for today, my friends.

Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow, and I hope you are too.
