Day 237 Every Choice Carries Consequences
Show Notes
In this Savory Salt episode, Allen Roberds delves into Alma 52:7-26, specifically Alma 52:14, to explore how the Nephites' choices led to dangerous circumstances. He powerfully illustrates that every decision we make, from micro-choices to major ones, carries significant consequences. This daily scripture reflection from the Book of Mormon encourages listeners to make conscious, Spirit-guided choices to shape their path.
Key Points
- The episode uses Alma 52:7-26, focusing on Alma 52:14, to demonstrate how past choices inevitably lead to current circumstances, both positive and negative.

I hope today that if we can remember one thing, it is the power of our choices.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.
Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from, thank you for joining me. I know that I'm cheering for your every success. Our choices always carry consequences.
That's the message inside of Savory Salt today. Welcome to day 237 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon together. Today, you're going to be reading Alma chapter 52, verses 7 through 26.
And you know, interesting note about Alma 52, and perhaps maybe some of you listeners can help me out with this one. I like to sometimes dive into research around what conference talks or what prophets or apostles have spoken on different topics and chapters. And in the past in Savory Salt, I've referenced a couple of them that I've found inside of my research.
Interesting thing to note about Alma chapter 52, at least as far as I can research, and I speaking specifically to general conference talks, I have not found a general conference talk that references Alma chapter 52 at all, any of the verses. And I thought that was quite interesting. I searched all sorts of different citation places and have not found it.
So today, I don't know, maybe this is an original thought from Allen rather than one that I've learned from somewhere in the past. I want to share with you the verse for today. It is Alma chapter 52, verse 14.
And if you're reading in context here, you're going to see that the Nephites have found themselves in a very difficult and precarious situation as the Lamanites are starting to surround them and starting to take some of the cities that they used to have as strongholds. And verse 14 says this, and thus were the Nephites in those dangerous circumstances in the ending of the 20 and 6th year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. This is a very short scripture and may not seem to have very much spiritual context at all.
And yet we have seen through the last couple of chapters that the choices the Nephites have made have eventually led to this situation. My friends, we make somewhere in the neighborhood, they've done all sorts of different science and whatnot. I'm not going to cite any specific study, but we make somewhere around 20 to 30,000 different decisions a day.
All these little micro choices that we make to wake up or not wake up, can have consequences. And then sometimes, as we see with the Nephites here, they could be even dangerous or dire consequences and circumstances that we find ourselves in. I hope today that if we can remember one thing, it is the power of our choices.
This podcast is brought to you by the Holy Spirit. I'm going to start with a situation where we can lessen the possibility of dangerous and dire circumstances. I can remember specific times where I paused and thought into my choices.
On my mission, for example, there were several times where I was looking out the window, perhaps looking at the moon, and just reflecting on my choices. And I thought, my choices brought me to Outer Mongolia. What are the consequences I am currently experiencing from my choices that brought me to Outer Mongolia?
There's been other times in my life when I've paused and thought, I know exactly the choice that has led to this consequence in my life. There are times when our choices and our consequences are very clearly attached. Other times, and I might say most times, it's the level of our choices we make on a daily basis that will lead us down the paths of safety, danger, success, failure.
I encourage you to make an emphasis of your daily choice with the Spirit. That's all for today, my friends. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.
Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow and I hope you are too.
