In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life, and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.
Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me. And know that I'm cheering for your every success.
My friends, when you're in the middle of the trials and tribulations, or perhaps even in the middle of war, where do you turn? That's a little bit of our message today on day 221. Welcome to Savory Salt and welcome to Alma chapter 43, verses 22 and 23. 21 to 40, right in the middle of the war chapters, or at least the beginning of these wars here.
These verses are interesting. There's a lot of lessons that we can pull out of the war chapters, and especially a lot of things that we can learn from Captain Moroni when it comes to preparing ourselves for difficult times. Which I think, with the Book of Mormon being made for our day, should be something that we should pay attention to.
But I want to get into the verse for today as it gives us a pattern that we can follow when it comes to better understanding what should we do in times of need. And that comes in Alma chapter 43, verse 23. It says this: "But it came to pass as soon as they departed into the wilderness, Moroni sent spies into the wilderness to watch their camp.
And Moroni, also knowing of the prophecies of Alma, sent certain men unto him, desiring him that he should inquire of the Lord whether the armies of the Nephites should go to defend themselves against the Lamanites." I love this because in time of war and challenge and struggle, Moroni turned to the Lord, or at least he turned to Alma, knowing that Alma was a prophet, and had Alma turn to the Lord and ask for direction. And the Lord answers their prayers and provides direction and counsel, which directly impacts the outcome of this battle. This got me thinking about a very personal picture that I have in my house.
My sister gifted this to me as a gift, and I absolutely love it. It is a picture of Abraham Lincoln kneeling before a battlefield, and there's some rays of sunshine coming across him. And there's a quote that is said by Abraham Lincoln from his times in reference to the Civil War.
Certainly a time that he was looking for direction and counsel in terms of great struggle inside of this nation. And the quote says: "I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go." My friends, when it seems too difficult to stand by yourself, perhaps there are moments where you literally have no idea what you're going to do. I hope you can remember this counsel both from Moroni and from Abraham Lincoln, with the conviction that when you have nowhere else to go, turn to your knees.
And when you kneel down, turn to the Lord and seek His counsel, because there is never a time that we cannot turn to the Lord and seek His direction and counsel and blessing in our lives. Moroni was certainly going through it during his time. Abraham Lincoln was certainly going through it during his time.
And my friends, I think many of us in many different parts of the world are going through something very similar in our time. Stick with it. Stick with the Lord.
Turn to Him. Seek His counsel and seek to be uplifted by the promptings and the impressions that He gives to you in your life. That's all for today, my friends.
Remember that "by small and simple things are great things brought to pass." Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow, and I hope you are too.
