Show Notes

Join Allen Roberds on Savory Salt Day 210 as he reflects on Alma 37:6, emphasizing how "by small and simple things are great things brought to pass." This episode explores the profound impact of consistent, seemingly minor efforts in spiritual growth and everyday life, drawing lessons from Alma's counsel to his son in the Book of Mormon.

Key Points

  • Alma 37:6 reveals the powerful principle that great achievements are often the result of small and simple, consistent efforts.
  • Allen Roberds illustrates this principle through examples like the preservation of holy writ, the growth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from humble beginnings, and personal missionary experiences.
  • The episode encourages listeners to recognize and value the cumulative power of daily, incremental actions in their spiritual journey and personal development.
  • Alma's testimony to his son, Helaman, in Alma 36:26-30 and Alma 37:1-9 underscores the importance of faithfulness in seemingly minor duties for greater blessings.

Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life, and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I'm cheering for your every success. My friends, you have done great things.

And how have you done those great things? Today, you should know by now, it's happened by small and simple things. Welcome to day 210 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon together.

Today you're going to be reading Alma chapter 36, verses 26-30. You will wrap up chapter 36, a great testimony of Alma to his son there. And then he's going to continue talking to his son in your reading today, Alma chapter 37, verses 1-9.

We had to choose this verse today, didn't we? We had to choose Alma chapter 37, verse 6, right? I mean, you're going to recognize it right off because you hear it every day, at least those of you that stay inside of Savory Salt on a daily basis.

And by the way, that's a great thing! We're 20-plus hours into Savory Salt, which means that your reading has got to be over a day of reading the Book of Mormon this year. It's probably taking you longer to read the verses than it does to listen to the Savory Salt episode.

And yet, if I were to tell you to wake up at 6 a.m. and just read the Book of Mormon from 6 a.m. to tomorrow morning at 6 a.m., that sounds like it would be troublesome and laborious. But you've done that. You've done that from day 1 to day 210.

Let's take a look at verse 6 and see if you recognize what I'm talking about. Now you may suppose that this is foolishness in me. But behold, I say unto you that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.

And small means in many instances doth confound the wise. Now, how small are you talking about here? Well, Alma, in verse 5, is talking about the plates retaining their brightness.

He wants the plates to stay shiny over the years and he believes that they're going to be able to do that. The Lord's going to keep the plates bright and shiny. Anything that has holy writ is going to stay bright and shiny.

And that's what he's talking about in the beginning of six when he's like, "Now you think that's foolishness, but I'm going to tell you: by small and simple things are great things brought to pass." Like this Church starting with six people and growing to millions, and the primary path of the growth of this Church comes through 18-year-old young men and 19-year-old young women as missionaries, right? Nobody could look at that and say, "Wow, who are the most likely to go out and have an impact on their community? Let's grab 18-year-old guys, right?" It's just not logical.

I think about when I got to Mongolia in 1999, there were roughly 1,500 members. And I don't know if I've ever talked about the size of Mongolia, but Mongolia is roughly the size of Los Angeles to Chicago in the United States. Those are small things and yet through them, great things will come to pass.

I love this verse. This verse is true in every aspect of our lives. The Bible says, That by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.

Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow, and I hope you are.
