In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.
Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I'm cheering for your every success. What is the Word of God worth to you?
Welcome to day 174 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon together. Today, you're going to be reading Alma chapter 15, verses 14 through 19. You'll finish that chapter and then you're going to read Alma chapter 16, verses 1 through 10.
And the verse that we have today is kind of interesting because, as happens sometimes in Savory Salt, it's the middle of a thought. So we won't continue the thought necessarily, but we are going to read this verse because there's kind of an almost a side note inside of here as Alma and Amulek go and Zeezrom ends up baptized, which is awesome. And there were many that were able to escape from Ammonihah and were able to embrace the gospel in a different city.
And then we get to verse 16 in Alma chapter 15. And it hit me this time different than it has before. I'm interested how it sits with you as we read it.
Let's take a look at verse 16. And it came to pass that Alma and Amulek, Amulek having forsaken all his gold and silver and his precious things, which were in the land of Ammonihah, for the Word of God, he being rejected by those who were once his friends and also by his father and his kindred. Now, again, this is just the middle of a thought here.
It's almost parenthetical, right? It's almost like these parentheses in the statement here. I think it's interesting just how much Amulek gave up by listening to the angel that told him originally that Alma was going to come and be in his life.
We look at the list of things here. He gave up his gold, his silver, his precious things. That's an interesting kind of nod back to Lehi and his family as they needed to leave to find the promised land.
We be right back. They left behind all of kind of the worldly things, right? The gold, the silver, the precious things.
And they did it for the Word of God. And here Amulek did it but then we get something that's a little bit more personal, right? He's also rejected by those that were once his friends and his father and his kindred.
Amulek gives up everything for the Word of God. He ends up working with Alma side by side as a missionary for God and by doing so he loses or rather he gives up everything. That really has me thinking about the value and the worth of accepting the Word of God in my own life.
What do I give up or what am I not willing to give up today? What habits do I need to give up? What luxuries perhaps or what time or activities or leisure activities, what am I doing that take me away from being in the work and accepting the Word of God?
It's got me thinking a little bit. It's definitely got me looking in the mirror and thinking about, wow, Amulek really took some incredible steps to follow Alma and ultimately repent and follow the Lord. Well, how can I be a little more like Amulek?
He's not one of those that typically comes to mind when it comes to like heroes of the Book of Mormon. And yet this time as I read it, I go, wow, sign me up. I want to be a little more like Amulek in my life.
Doesn't mean I want to, like, burn the crops in the fields in my family, right? I want them to come as well. But it shows that Amulek was willing, willing to have those things happen in his life because the Word of God was more important to him than all of those other things.
Something worth digging into and thinking about personally as you continue to read these verses day after day after day. Thank you for joining me here on Savory Salt. And that's all for today, my friends.
Remember that By small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow and hope you are too.
