Join Allen Roberds in a reflection on Alma 12:1-13, exploring how our heed and diligence to God's word unlock the mysteries of the kingdom. Discover how consistent obedience to basic spiritual principles, much like the "wax on, wax off" method, unfurls deeper understanding and revelation, preparing us for greater spiritual insight.

Key Points

  • Alma 12:1-13 teaches that receiving a deeper knowledge of God's mysteries is directly tied to our heed and diligence in applying His word.
  • Consistent obedience to the commandments and diligent practice of gospel basics, similar to Mr. Miyagi's lessons, builds the foundation for spiritual growth and revelation.
  • The more we abide by and study the scriptures we currently possess, the more the Lord is willing to unfurl additional mysteries through inspiration and divine guidance.
  • Demonstrating our willingness to follow existing divine counsel proves our readiness to receive further spiritual light and contribute to building God's kingdom.
  • By focusing on small, simple acts of faithfulness and obedience, we invite greater revelation and a more profound understanding of spiritual truths into our lives.

as we do that, more mysteries will be unfurled to us because we're showing the Lord that we want to pay heed and diligence to the words that he's given us already, and when we do so, more will come into our lives through inspiration and through revelation.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be Savory Salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life, and ultimately you and I can be Savory Salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me, and know that I'm cheering for your every success. Got a little phrase to see if it'll stir some memories for some of you: "Wax on, wax off." Welcome to day 167 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon together.

Today you're going to be reading Alma chapter 12, verses 1 through 13. Alma is going to dive back into the testimony bearing and teaching while Amulek steps aside for just a second. And that's going to take us into our verse today as Alma begins teaching at a level that has Zeezrom backing off and shaking in his boots a little bit.

And we get to this interesting teaching here in Alma 12. It says: "And now Alma began to expound these things unto him, saying: It is given unto many to know the mysteries of God; nevertheless they are laid under a strict command that they shall not impart only according to the portion of his word which he doth grant unto the children of men, according to the heed and diligence which they give unto him." The following verses after that kind of let us know that, like, the more you abide by the commandments and the more you heed and are diligent to the word of God, the more is given. I'm talking about the original "Karate Kid" here, Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita, right? Mr. Miyagi.

This is the original. And here you have a teenager that wants all the things. He wants to defend himself.

He wants to be able to fight. He wants to be able to punch and kick and do all the things. And what does Mr.

Miyagi have him do? He has him paint the fence. He has him sand the deck.

He has him "wax on, wax off." Daniel's like, "This is useless. I'm wasting my time," but I love that he stays with it. And as he stays with it, ultimately you have this point in the movie where it all comes together and makes sense.

And Mr. Miyagi does, you know, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He does specific moves and Daniel's able to deflect all of those moves.

And he did it because he learned the basics and he did the basics exactly correctly. Remember those times where he's like, making sure that when you paint the fence that your wrist is like this and you paint the fence and your wrist is like that, and when you sand the deck you sand like this? That was Mr.

Miyagi teaching the basics and testing whether Daniel would stick to the basics. I think the Lord is doing something similar here when it comes to us understanding the mysteries of God. If you want more scripture, then abide by the scripture we currently have.

How much do you use it and study it? It's been awesome to have you along on Savory Salt because I have specific examples of some of you telling me personally that you are reading the scriptures more than you have before. I love that.

Let's continue doing that because as we do that, more mysteries will be unfurled to us because we're showing the Lord that we want to pay heed and diligence to the words that he's given us already, and when we do so, more will come into our lives through inspiration and through revelation. So today, my friends, be a little bit of Daniel in "Karate Kid." Paint that fence, sand that deck, wax on, wax off, and by doing so, the mysteries of God will be further unfurled to you through revelation as you've shown the Lord the heed and diligence that you are willing to do what he's already shown you in order to understand what else you can do to build the kingdom of God here on the earth. That's all for today, my friends.

Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be Savory Salt. I'll be here tomorrow, and I hope you are too.
