Allen Roberds reflects on Alma 2:1-16, specifically Alma 2:5, which describes contention and political division surrounding Amlici. He encourages listeners to navigate modern political differences by remembering that contention does not come from Christ and seeking unity under the Savior.

Key Points

  • The Book of Mormon, particularly Alma's early chapters, offers lessons for our day regarding political contention and societal division.
  • Alma 2:5 describes people gathering 'every man according to his mind, whether it were for or against Amlici,' leading to 'much dispute and wonderful contentions.'
  • The host reminds listeners that contention does not come from Christ, who teaches us to be a people without contention and to seek unity.
  • Listeners are encouraged to hold their political opinions and share them, but to do so with consideration for the 'wonderful contentions' that can arise and to remember what it means to be a follower of Christ in those environments.
  • Seeking unity under the banner of heaven and Jesus Christ helps us maintain the Spirit amidst political differences.

What I am saying is perhaps be considerate of the wonderful contentions that tend to surround us inside of those political environments and consider what it might be to be a follower of Christ inside of those opportunities to share your opinions.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be Savory Salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be Savory Salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me. And know that I'm cheering for your every success.

Welcome to day 149 on our 365 day journey through the Book of Mormon together. Today, we're going to be reading Alma chapter two, verses one through We're going to be introduced to another challenger inside of these days of Alma as chief judge. I tell you what, on the front end of Alma, I encouraged you to think into why this large book of Alma was included inside of the Book of Mormon.

When we think about the Book of Mormon being for our day, wow, can we already get some lessons right off the beginning of this book. And it continues today inside of our reading. Let's take a look at the verse for the day and see what we can learn from it.

It's going to come from Alma chapter 2 verse 5. And there's going to be a man that gathers people around. He's one of the Nehor followers.

He believes that his smooth talking should ultimately make him king because of his ability to move people and to gather people. And a lot of people. The people assembled themselves together throughout all the land, every man according to his mind, whether it were for or against Amlici.

In separate bodies, having much dispute and wonderful contentions one with another. Now, I chuckle at this phrase here because there was a time, I've referenced it before in Savory Salt, where wonderful contentions would be something I would love to describe in my life. I love the argument for the sake of argument sometimes, or at least I used to.

I'm starting to get a little bit less bought into the contention for the sake of contention idea. And yet interestingly enough, if you notice the footnote there in contentions, it's the only word inside this verse that has a footnote. It takes us over to the visitation of the Savior to the Nephites where he reminds us where contentions come from.

And it's not from him, by the way. And he reminds us that we should be a people without contention, that we should seek to be one. Now, I think it's interesting this verse five because whether you're listening from the United States of America or from any other country in the world, you could pretty much choose some sort of current leader or prospective leader inside of here and describe the very political situations that many countries are dealing with today.

So I want to encourage you as I take my own advice here and take my own medication here just a little bit. And remember that although we're going to have differences of opinions about where we should go politically and what we should do politically, this description here in separate bodies having much dispute and wonderful contentions one with another, that we just hold the reminder of where contention comes from. He can prevent us from keeping the Spirit in our lives whose purpose there or at least one of the purposes is to actually unite us under the banner of heaven and unite under our Savior Jesus Christ.

Something worth thinking about a little bit as you go and get politically charged inside of your opinions of what you think leaders should do. I'm not saying don't have an opinion, and I'm not saying don't go voice your opinion about your leaders. What I am saying is perhaps be considerate of the wonderful contentions that tend to surround us inside of those political environments and consider what it might be to be a follower of Christ inside of those opportunities to share your opinions.

That's all for today, my friends. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be Savory Salt. I'll be here tomorrow, and I hope you are too.
