Show Notes

Allen Roberds delves into Mosiah 21:5, exploring the profound afflictions of the Nephites and their seemingly hopeless situation with "no way out" from the Lamanites. This episode challenges listeners to reflect on where they turn when faced with overwhelming circumstances and feel utterly unable to deliver themselves from their trials, emphasizing the consequences of past choices.

Key Points

  • The Nephites experienced severe afflictions from the Lamanites as a direct consequence of their previous choices, including their role in the killing of Abinadi.
  • Mosiah 21:5 describes the Nephites' dire predicament, surrounded by their enemies with "no way that they could deliver themselves out of their hands."
  • Allen Roberds prompts listeners to consider their own responses when feeling trapped and helpless, asking if they turn to self-reliance, others, or ultimately to the Lord.
  • This episode serves as a cliffhanger, inviting reflection on where individuals seek solace and aid when facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles, before revealing the Nephites' decision tomorrow.

It is worth pausing and reflecting and asking, 'Who do I turn to when I find myself in those situations?'

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello my friends and family wherever you are listening from, Thank you for joining me, and know that I am cheering for your every success. Welcome to Day 132 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon. Today you are going to be reading Mosiah chapter 20, verses 12 through 26.

You will finish that chapter, and you are going to read Mosiah 21, verses 1 through 8. This is interesting. We are going to go through this chapter here, in kind of an interesting context, as we are watching the consequences of the actions of the people of Limhi.

They made their choices when they killed the prophet Abinadi. We learn inside of the verses here today that, due to those choices, they are going to be heavily afflicted by the Lamanites. And the verse today is actually kind of the beginning of a thought that we'll finish tomorrow.

So we've done that before in Savory Salt. But I want to read today from Mosiah chapter 21, verse 5, and just start a thought that we will continue tomorrow. It says this: And now the afflictions of the Nephites were great, and there was no way that they could deliver themselves out of their hands, for the Lamanites had surrounded them on every side.

Now this one's going to be, like I said, kind of a cliffhanger thought here, but it's interesting that the choices the Nephites made in their own wisdom led them to a position that there was no way that they could deliver themselves out of their hands. I don't know if you ever found yourself in a position like that before, where you felt like, 'Oh my goodness, I can't do anything to fix this situation!' This is where the Nephites were pushed. They were left to themselves because they had made choices that said, 'You know what, Lord, I don't think I need you in my life.' Thank you, but no thank you.

We're going to live our lives this way. And I think it leaves it in an interesting scenario there to pause in those moments and ask yourself: When you find yourself in those moments, where do you turn? Who do you turn to?

Do you continue to try to make the best of the situation? Do you seek for others to help pull you out of the situation? Do you turn to the Lord?

I think this is an interesting first half of this thought today to simply see where the Nephites are and understand that in our lives, we too may find ourselves in positions where we can do nothing to get ourselves out of the situation. It is worth pausing and reflecting and asking, 'Who do I turn to when I find myself in those situations?' That is the cliffhanger thought for today. Tomorrow we will certainly take an opportunity to look at a verse that shows you where the Nephites decided to turn.

But for today, I'll simply let it simmer for you. Figure out in your own way, when you seemingly have nowhere else to turn, where do you go? That's all for today, my friends.

Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow, and I hope you are too.
