Key Points

  • Allen Roberds explores the concept of 'contention,' referencing a topical guide that links it to spiritual darkness, false doctrine, and the loss of the Holy Ghost.
  • The episode presents a 'Savory Salt checklist' for listeners to assess where contention exists in their lives and how they can better align with the Savior.
  • Listeners are encouraged to actively seek ways to knit their hearts together in unity and increase in love one towards another, reflecting Alma's teachings to new converts.
  • The reflection highlights how a shared focus on Jesus Christ and principles of His gospel can lead to a powerful sense of unity among believers.

So for your Savory Salt check a little bit, take this as a little bit of a checklist: Where contention in your life exists? Where are you united with one eye? And how can you do a better alignment with the Savior? Where can you better knit your hearts together in unity and increase in love one towards another?

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I'm cheering for your every success. Welcome to day 129 on our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon and congratulations on hitting another 5%.

Today, when you finish your reading, you're going to be completed with 35% of the Book of Mormon. Well done. One third of the Book of Mormon done.

For the rest of the week, your reading today is going to be Mosiah chapter 18, verses 11 through 29. We're just going to be right in the middle of Mosiah 18. We've got some great verses here to look over.

We're going to focus on one in particular that I really like. Alma has talked to his people about being baptized and making the choice to do so. Today, you're going to see Alma get baptized as well as many others.

And then we're going to see them named as the Church of God or the Church of Christ, which is cool. And then we're going to settle in on our verse today which is verse 21. Let's take a look at it: And he commanded them that there should be no contention one with another, but that they should look forward with one eye, having one faith and one baptism, having their hearts knit together in unity and in love one towards another.

Now there's some cool stuff inside of here. We've talked a little bit about a few components of this earlier in Savory Salt. The first thing I want to look at in this verse is the footnote, actually, that comes inside of "contention." It takes you to the Topical Guide, and the terminology that's associated with contention here is really kind of interesting to me.

It says to see also 'contend,' and then it says spiritual darkness, disputations, false doctrine, false prophets, hard-heartedness, the loss of the Holy Ghost, and strife. Now, those are some interesting terms. Alma's trying to get his people to understand that the Lord wants none of that inside of his people.

You hear that and you go, 'wow,' that's kind of a steep order, right? None of that at all. That's pretty hard to kind of do.

And so part of your Savory Salt checklist today, a little check-in for you today is to look at contention in your life. Where does it exist? gives the alternate side of that: that they look forward with one eye, one faith, one baptism, and then their hearts are knit together in unity. I love the illustration there that our hearts get knit together.

I don't know if you ever put a group of people together, but it's difficult, right? The bigger the group of people, the harder it is to get everybody unified. Thank you for joining us.

Thank you for watching. Jesus Christ and our desire to take the sacrament united us. In a small way, it made our hearts knit together in unity.

So for your Savory Salt check a little bit, take this as a little bit of a checklist: Where contention in your life exists? Where are you united with one eye? Hopefully that with Jesus Christ, but perhaps your one eye is focused on other things right now.

And how can you do a better alignment with the Savior? Where can you better knit your hearts together in unity and increase in love one towards another? This is a great little checklist here to just see where you're at in your own life as Alma's teaching these new people that are embracing the Savior how to live a life based on the Savior's teachings and principles.

Great direction, great little compass check-in today for Savory Salt. Well, for us, getting a little bit closer to the Lord as we continue studying the scriptures. That's all for today, my friends.

Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow. I hope you are too.
