In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I, Allan Roberds, share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.
Hello, my friends and family, wherever you are listening from. Thank you for joining me, and know that I am cheering for your every success! Welcome to Day 83 along our 365-day journey through the Book of Mormon together.
Today you are going to be reading from 2 Nephi chapter 31, verses 6 through 21. So, you are going to basically read the majority of that chapter. You are going to finish—we are going to finish it out today.
There are going to be some great verses on baptism, about making covenants with the Lord, and entering onto the path, as Nephi calls it. And today we're going to talk about the backside of that path in our verse. Today we've selected verse 20 to share with you out of 2 Nephi chapter 31.
Right before this, Nephi says an interesting thing. He says, 'Look, if you've made these covenants, and you've been baptized, and you've repented of your sins and done these things, are you done?' Have you got it checked off? Did you check the thing off the list?
And he gives some answers inside of here, and verse 20 is part of the answer that he shares. Let's go ahead and read that, and then let's talk about that for just a second. Verse 20 says: 'Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men.
Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.' I love this because, to me, this is saying that our covenants are not about box checking for the Lord. It's not about what we did, check it off, and then we're done. Our covenants that we are making with the Lord are about becoming more like our Savior and our Heavenly Father.
And the more that we can endure to the end—and then he gives us a little bit of a checklist here. And I actually kind of... let's kind of consider this a checklist to keep our savor. Like, here's a little savory salt checklist: Let's press forward with a steadfastness in Christ.
That's a great opportunity to do my best to have faith and show my faith in Jesus Christ. Let's have a perfect brightness of hope. I love that one because that always goes down to that vision of light for me.
And we've talked a little bit before about light and darkness, but I love the brightness of hope. Love of God and of all men. Press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ.
You have been feasting inside the word of Christ here as you have done Savory Salt episodes. If you have followed along on your reading, these things are not just things that the Lord sees as checklist items. This is an opportunity to become a better person through living the gospel of Jesus Christ.
I love that. And that is an opportunity for me to become a little bit more Savory Salt in my life. That's all for today, my friends.
I know that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow. I hope you are too.
