Join Allen Roberds on Savory Salt Day 44 for a reflection on 2 Nephi 3:12, exploring how the Book of Mormon and the Bible are prophesied to "grow together." Discover how these unified scriptural records are intended to confound false doctrines, lay down contentions, and bring peace and knowledge of God's covenants in the latter days.
Key Points
- Lehi's prophecy in 2 Nephi 3, delivered through the lens of Joseph from Egypt, foretells the coming forth of future written records.
- 2 Nephi 3:12 specifically prophesies that the scriptures from Lehi's posterity (the Book of Mormon) and the records of Judah (the Bible) will grow together.
- The primary purpose of these combined scriptures is to confound false doctrines, lay down contentions, and establish peace among God's children.
- These unified records are crucial for bringing people to a knowledge of their fathers' history and the Lord's covenants in the latter days.
- Allen Roberds shares how studying both the Book of Mormon and the Bible together strengthens his testimony of Jesus Christ and provides greater personal direction and peace.
I love that we have both of these books of Scripture to grow from and to better enable my testimony of Jesus Christ to grow.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.
Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I am cheering for your every success. Welcome to day 44 on our 365 day journey reading from the pages of the Book of Mormon.
To begin, I need to celebrate and welcome our new listeners from India as well. So that includes now listeners from North America. We're going to be reading from 2 Nephi chapter 3, verses 5 through 18.
This is the biggest chunk of chapter 3 and we're going to dive into a section here. This was really hard to choose because it's going to be our only verse from chapter 3 and whenever it gets down into that level, it's very difficult for me to try and pick and choose and know which one might be, I don't know, the right one. I don't know that there's a right one or a wrong one.
But the one that I landed on sits inside of discussing the Book of Mormon and the Bible together. Chapter 3 is really cool because it's Lehi talking about the lens of Joseph from Egypt. He uses Joseph's words to talk and prophesy about another future Joseph.
And I'll let you find that inside of those verses and inside your reading. Today we're going to read verse 12 together. It's going to take a little bit different lens from the Josephs.
It's going to say, verse 12. The fruit of thy loins shall write, and the fruit of the loins of Judah shall write. And that which shall be written by the fruit of thy loins, and also that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah, shall grow together, unto the confounding of false doctrines, and laying down of contentions, and establishing peace among the fruit of thy loins, and bringing them to the knowledge of their fathers in the latter days, and also to the knowledge of my covenants, saith the Lord.
And as we interpret it, we see that Lehi is actually talking about him and Nephi and their posterities. They're writing and leaving a record behind. And then we have the record from Judah and that's the tribes and that's the record of the Jews.
We know that today to be the Bible. What do these two do together? Well, when you use them together, they're going to grow together and you're going to find that you have the ability to confound false doctrines.
You're going to be able to lay down contentions. I love that we have both of these books of Scripture to grow from and to better enable my testimony of Jesus Christ to grow. I know that as I study these words, I grow closer to the Lord.
I know that as I read them and try to figure out what they are in my life, I gain better direction, I gain greater peace, and hopefully what I'm doing is also bringing to my family a greater knowledge of the covenants of the Lord and the history that I believe to be the word of the Lord. That's all for today. Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.
Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow. I hope you are too.
