In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.
Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me, and know that I am cheering for your every success. Today is Day 10.
You know, I say that at the beginning of every episode, but I really want to emphasize it. I may not know who you are or what you're trying to do in your life, but I can still cheer for you regardless of whether I know who you are. So when I say that I'm cheering for your every success, you've got to know that I'm cheering for you.
And Day 10 is actually one of our rare just straight one-chapter reading. If you're following along on the path of 365 days, today you will read 1 Nephi chapter 5. And before you freak out and say, 'Whoa, it's an entire chapter,' it's only 22 verses or so.
So don't worry about that too much. The verse we're going to dive into today is actually a continuation of some previous conversations we've had. And we haven't had that many yet, but this is a continuation of it.
It comes from verse 21. And this is Nephi telling us what's going on, and they have the records now. They got the records back.
And he says this: 'And we had obtained the records which the Lord had commanded us. And we searched them and found that they were desirable. Yea, even of great worth unto us.' Now, I love this one because this is like the second half of the story after Nephi gets the plates.
He realizes when he's struggling with what to do with Laban and how to go about getting the plates that his family needs to have the scriptures in order to know the Lord and know the commandments of the Lord. And then we find out that they got the scriptures, and they did something with them. What did they do?
Let's see. They searched them. They found them desirable, and they found them of great worth.
So cool there. I love, I love those three pieces put together. Search them!
It doesn't do any good to have a Book of Mormon that sits on your shelf. I mean, it's great to have, I guess, as a library piece or something, but get it out, read it, search it, see what kind of worth it is for you. I wanted to share just a quick story about serving again.
I served in Mongolia, but I served at a time in Mongolia that the Book of Mormon didn't exist in Mongolian. It was not translated yet. In fact, when I got to the country, my trainer, my companion, my first companion, Elder Yorgason, was his name.
Hey, Elder Yorgason, if you ever listen to this. But he actually was helping in the process of translating the Book of Mormon. And so I actually kind of witnessed what Nephi is talking about.
People that had a desire to know more about God, and they didn't have a chance to do so. And so we actually had translated, at the time, we had a few scriptures translated. We had a few very important chapters translated.
No surprise, spoiler alert, but we had 3 Nephi 11 translated in Mongolian so that we could share that, and 1 Nephi 8, which we get to here in a few days. But it was awesome to see the faith of those that were interested in learning more in Mongolia, because they didn't have the complete book, but the chapters that they did have, they loved, and they cherished, and they searched them, and they found them desirable, and of great worth. So use what you've got.
You have them. If you don't have them, maybe I need to put a link in so that you can get a copy if you haven't had a copy of the Book of Mormon this whole time. But you can read it virtually.
You can read it hard copy. Get it. Search it.
See what value it's going to bring in your life. So that's all I have for today. Remember, my friends, that "by small and simple things are great things brought to pass." Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt.
I'll be here tomorrow. I hope you are too.
