Join Allen Roberds on Savory Salt as he explores Nephi's profound desire for personal revelation in 1 Nephi 2:16. Discover how Nephi, despite his youth, sought the mysteries of God directly from the Lord, leading to his heart being softened and belief in his father's words. This episode emphasizes the importance of individual spiritual ownership and seeking personal understanding from God.

Key Points

  • Nephi, though young, possessed a great desire to understand the mysteries of God and sought personal revelation through prayer.
  • The Lord visited Nephi, softening his heart and confirming the words spoken by his father, Lehi, preventing him from rebelling like his brothers.
  • Allen Roberds encourages listeners to take ownership of their spiritual journey, emphasizing that finding truth is a personal experience between them and God.
  • The episode contrasts Nephi's diligent seeking with his brothers' rebellion, which stemmed from their unwillingness to pray or dive into understanding.
  • Listeners are invited to ask the Lord, make their scripture study personal, and allow God to soften their hearts to believe ancient prophets' words, much like Nephi did.

Make this about you and your experience so that you can do what Nephi did and have the Lord soften your heart and believe the words that have been spoken unto you by your fathers of old.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth, and in the same sentence offers a warning that savorless salt is good for nothing. Join me in an attempt to be savory salt as I share each day one verse of scripture and one small thought. Perhaps this small daily emphasis can lead to greater savor in your life and ultimately you and I can be savory salt.

Hello, my friends and family, wherever you're listening from. Thank you for joining me and know that I'm cheering for your every success. We are into Day six.

We're almost into a week here of study and one verse a day. This has been fun so far. I'm enjoying this.

I hope you're having a good time. And today, if you're following along on the path for 365 days, Day six takes us to 1 Nephi 2:8-24. Okay, so that's your reading for the day.

And as I was looking at this, I really was going to do verse 20 here, but I'm not going to do verse 20. So when you read verse 20, know that it's a major theme of the book. But instead, what I wanted to dive into today was actually verse 16.

It's really interesting to me. We have Nephi here, and he's been listening to his dad and his dad's prophesying and getting mixed results. A lot of people are not liking him and what he has to say.

And in verse 16, we get some insight to Nephi's life here. He says: And it came to pass that I, Nephi, being exceedingly young, nevertheless being large in stature, and also having great desires to know of the mysteries of God, wherefore I did cry unto the Lord. And behold, he did visit me, and did soften my heart, that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father.

Wherefore I did not rebel against him like unto my brothers. Man, there's a lot inside of that verse, but just a couple of things that stand out to me and a quick thought around it. I think it's interesting Nephi talks about how young he is here, but he has this desire to know for himself these mysteries of God and the things that his dad Lehi has been talking about.

So what did he decide to do? Well, he decided to ask the Lord himself. And I think that's really interesting.

Nephi decided if this was going to be about him and his life, he was going to take ownership of the situation and he was going to dig in. And then he found out on the back end that, wow, I actually got my answer for me and my house. And that was pretty cool.

For you, whatever your age is, however old you are, whether this is your hundredth time through the Book of Mormon or your first time through the Book of Mormon, I think it's interesting that you need to hold the perspective that this is about you finding out. And if you want to find out about it, then you need to dive in. I think it's interesting, kind of spoiler alert here, he talks about this, you know, rebellion that his brothers go into, but Nephi and his brothers are going to talk, and Nephi's going to find out that his brothers didn't pray.

They didn't ask, they didn't dive in, they didn't want to know more. And that part of what caused their rebellion is because they just didn't do it. As you get into the Book of Mormon here, dive in.

This is between you and your understanding. This is between you and God as you dive through the scriptures here. Use that.

Ask the Lord. Make this about you and your experience so that you can do what Nephi did and have the Lord soften your heart and believe the words that have been spoken unto you by your fathers of old. That's all we have for today.

Remember that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Keep it small, keep it simple, and always seek to be savory salt. I'll be here tomorrow. Hope you are too.
